Chapter 25 – No Meaning in Anchoring (1)
Lin Si entered his room.
Ling Yi was lying on his own bed, gazing at the ceiling without speaking.
When Lin Si also came over to lie down, he stretched out an arm to clutch at his tricep.
Lin Si put his hand on top, patting lightly.
Ling Yi casted his eyes downwards.
Lin Si knew he had frightened Ling Yi with how he looked before and needed to comfort him.
He pondered for a while and said, “Your mother’s name is Ye Selin. She was my teacher.”
Ling Yi went stiff for a moment, then lifted his face to look at him.
“Ye Selin was a very gentle person. I’ve followed her for seven years and I’ve never seen her throw a tantrum once. She’s a little similar to Madam Chen, but even kinder.” Lin Si reached his hand over to flick Ling Yi’s nose. “But not so much like you.”
When Lin Si mentioned Ye Selin, his eyes gradually softened, and even seemed to hold a hint of longing in its gaze, unlike the cold, emotionless expression he wore in his usual daily life. Currently, he looked a little like that video clip he was in.
Ling Yi let out a “hmph”.
Lin Si continued, “I’ve also met your father. His work is very similar to what Tang Ning does, but he’s from the military, and he’s also the Marshal’s friend. You’ve probably already heard of his name…but Mr Ling’s work has a high level of confidentiality, so he seldom lives with Ye Selin. You followed him around most of the time.”
Ling Yi had already heard from Tang Ning about his father’s achievements and personality.
He also knew that the two both remained on Earth, and with thousands and millions of fellow humans, ceased to exist in this universe.
The strange thing was that, in this very instant, he did not feel any particular emotion. He was not sorrowful, nor joyful—he only felt as if he had discovered a truth that existed for a long time, and so he nodded his head lightly.
He pondered briefly, then asked, “Then why am I on the spaceship? Was there anything special about me?”
He grew up on the spaceship, so he naturally was able to find out a lot of information. For instance, when the Voyagers set off, those who held entry tickets, if they were in the military, they would be the utmost elites within the special forces. If they were scientists, if they were not geniuses among geniuses, then they would be dignitaries among dignitaries,5 and they could also bring one or two students or assistants who were crucial in aiding their research.
If they were neither, then they would be big shots in the economy or politics who could overturn the clouds and rain, and would have provided funding, resources, and technological support for the establishment of the Voyagers.
Lin Si thought he obviously did not belong in any three.
He looked at Lin Si, tilting his head. “Did my dad buy me a ship ticket?”
Lin Si looked at the ceiling, and after a long while, said, “According to the rules, ship tickets could not be exchanged. When I set up the system, I didn’t think there would be a child mixed into the cryogenic freezing samples. The reason behind this, I’m afraid only the Marshal knows.”
Lin Si had a point, because he knew what Lin Si’s personality was like, and Lin Si was someone who would almost never make mistakes. If he really knew there was an underaged child within the cryogenic freezing samples, he would absolutely not forget to set up a minimum age limit.
He asked, “Then did we know each other before?”
“Ye Selin always mentioned you. She probably also mentioned me to you, so we knew about each other, but never met.”
Ling Yi let out an “Ah”, as if he felt like it was a pity, then suddenly became happy once more. He said, “But we’ve met now!”
Lin Si smiled. “Actually…”
Ling Yi perked up his ears, but did not hear the rest of the sentence.
“Lin Si!” He felt a little frustrated.
Lin SI reached over to hug him. “Sleep.”
Ling Yi was only able to look at him one last time, before his forehead was pressed onto Lin Si’s chest.
Within that short glimpse, the Lin Si at that very moment had left an indelible silhouette inside his heart.
He had never seen Lin Si smile like that.
Although it held a little sorrow, it was incomparably gentle, as if the faint, faraway glow of the stars from outside the ship’s window had fallen into his eyes.
As he snuggled tightly against Lin Si’s chest, he could clearly feel each steady beat of his heart, and he could smell, on Lin Si’s body, the mellow scent of costus root that had not yet faded away.6 Suddenly, he felt his heart beat ruthlessly in his chest several times.
“Lin Si…” He could not help but call out Lin Si’s name.
“Hm?”
“Nevermind…” He lowered his voice.
After a long time, until Lin Si thought he had already fallen asleep, he suddenly spoke again.
“Lin Si, what does Ye Selin look like?”
“She’s very beautiful.”
“More beautiful than Beattie and Svena combined?”
“She’s not the same,” said Lin Si. “Ye Selin was a little softer than them. Very gentle, but very firm.”
Lin Si stopped to organise his words. Even though Ling Yi could not see his expression, he knew, at this moment, Lin Si was definitely smiling.
“I don’t know how to describe it, but she’s like the painting of the Holy Mother that’s hung up in the church. You couldn’t help but follow her, and we all loved her in the way a child loved their mother,” Lin Si spoke slowly. “One time she cut her hand on some broken shards, my junior—her name is Su Ting—when she saw the wound, she even started crying.”
Ling Yi then asked about her appearance. The colour of her hair, the colour of her eyes…
As Lin Si answered, the figure of the woman in his memories slowly floated to the top of his mind, becoming clear.
A sort of quiet beauty seeped through from within her soul, as if it had never been weathered down by the years.
On Ye Selin was a magnetism that seemed as if it was derived from the vast ocean, like the azure planet that was their homeland, every instant, neverendingly, calling for the wanderers to return.
The laboratory next door once jokingly told them, “All of you centre yourselves around Dr Ye Selin so much. At this rate, you can form a cult.”
Of course, Ye Selin’s scholarly achievements and her personality were both faultless. This individual who joked with them also respected her very much, and did not hold a single hint of mockery in his jest.
Lin Si continued to describe Ling Yi’s mother to him, until the little one fell into deep sleep.
Even though he was almost of age, he still loved to sleep like when he was a child, just like a little kitten.
This meant his body was still growing, and needed long periods of sleep to fulfil its various needs.
Lin Si frowned when he thought of some rather serious issues.
…He was almost an adult. For the past three years, how come he never asked a single question regarding human biology?
Thus, the next morning when Ling Yi woke up, he saw Lin Si already fully washed up. He sat on a chair that was moved next to his bed, looking down to examine Ling Yi.
Ling Yi: “…”
Lin Si saw that he was awake and tossed his blanket aside. Leaning down, he pressed Ling Yi’s shoulder with one hand.
Ling Yi had no idea what he was going to do, but he gave up on struggling and laid flat on the bed, like a little white mouse that was tied up and awaiting its dissection.
Lin Si was expressionless; the other hand that was not pressed on Ling Yi’s shoulder moved upwards to tangle in his hair. It moved in a few circles, then downwards, touching his auricle lightly several times.
That was a very technical kind of touch. It was close yet distant, like the tip of a feather.
Ling Yi felt ticklish and struggled a little, but he was pressed still by Lin Si.
Then it was his face, jaw…lastly, Lin Si’s fingers stopped at the side of his neck.
Ling Yi watched him with widened eyes.
Afterwards, he saw Lin Si’s head lower, leaning closer and closer to his.
Finally, Lin Si lightly blew at the side of his ear.
This action was like a trigger. All the places he had been touched seemingly formed a sensitive neural pathway on the inside, a fierce stimulation buzzing, then exploded against his cerebral cortex. Ling Yi’s entire body shivered, his breathing quickened significantly, and his consciousness temporarily blanked out.
But Lin Si’s intention was somewhere else. He lifted the blanket completely, and examined Ling Yi from top to bottom once more.
After confirming that Ling Yi did not appear to have the biological reaction he was meant to have, Lin Si frowned.
“Wash up. Come with me to the laboratory,” he said.
In this scenario, “come with me to the laboratory” absolutely did not mean he wanted Ling Yi to conduct experiments with him, but rather that he wanted to poke needles into Ling Yi’s body yet again.
Ling Yi snatched the blanket back, swiftly burying into it to separate himself from Lin Si. “What are you planning to do to me!”
“Check your hormone levels, then we’ll go to Area 9. I need to find a suitable person to replace Beattie,” said Lin Si expressionlessly, standing up.
At this moment, someone knocked on the door, and Lin Si left the room.
Only then did Ling Yi squirm and peer out of his blanket.
He looked into the mirror that was opposite from his bed. His entire body was pinkish, and he was slightly out of breath.
He thought about how Lin Si had leaned closer towards himself just now, and in his ears were only the thumping sounds of his heart, each beat growing quicker than the last.
