Chapter 27 – No Meaning in Anchoring (3)

His hand loosened very slowly, but very resolutely.

Ling Yi felt the same anxiety and emptiness he felt when he was unable to grab ahold of something. He called out Lin Si’s name, and continued to grab his hand.

He looked up at Lin Si.

Lin Si’s expression was ice cold.

Yes, it was freezing cold. Not a coldness that was indifferent, nor his usual expressionlessness, Ling Yi could tell. The moment that woman mentioned Su Ting, Lin Si had turned completely ice cold.

Ling Yi gazed at him, his pretty eyelashes quivering, full of concern and worry.

Lin Si looked straight into his eyes. “Everyone only knows a part of the truth.”

Ling Yi could tell something was wrong by the tone of his voice. This morning, even though…even though Lin Si did bad things to him, they were still close and inseparable— but now they were not. Lin Si had never used this kind of tone to talk to him before.

“I didn’t think she would have such an intense reaction today, but her words weren’t false,” Lin Si said. “I hope you can make your own judgement.”

Ling Yi did not know what to say, he did not know what to do to console Lin Si, he did not know what the truth was. He only wanted Lin Si to not feel that way.

“I…” He was about to say something, but Lin Si interrupted him.

“Go to Su Ting. She’ll be very happy to see you.”

After speaking, Lin Si turned and left, leaving Ling Yi alone in the empty hallway.

He looked at that tightly-shut main entrance, his gaze a little lost.

According to that woman, the one who should have been on the ship was Ye Selin, his mother, but she did not board the ship, and the one who went instead was Lin Si. So what she meant was that Lin Si had obtained the capacity meant for Ye Selin.

That woman also said Lin Si was a devil, and Lin Si would definitely go to hell. He did not know what kind of grudge would lead a person to say such venomous things. All because he had replaced another person to board the ship?

But he remembered very clearly, written on the notebook he saw at Zheng Shu’s, that three years ago, Lin Si had rejected the ship ticket.

Lin Si said that everyone only knew one part of the truth.

But these truths contradicted each other.

Whereas Ye Selin…he did not know.

When he thought about that name, why did he feel indifferent, like how one would feel towards a stranger? He heard about what she looked like from Lin Si, but he was still unable to sketch out her image.

When Lin Si let go of himself, was it because he thought he would leave him because of Ye Selin?

These things, he did not know.

The only thing he knew was that he knew nothing about Lin Si’s past, and it was the reason why he was so helpless while facing the current situation. To learn of those demons that haunted Lin Si’s dreams in the dead of the night, embraces and affection were useless. He needed to truly know him, and to know him, he needed to know what happened one hundred years ago when the Voyagers set sail.

The boy who wore a black military uniform once again walked towards that entrance door, and scanned his bracelet to open it.

He was determined to see Su Ting, someone who might have truly known him, as well as known Lin Si.

In that instant, he no longer looked like that childish, little Ling Yi. Within the pair of beautiful almond-shaped eyes, a still, quiet hue emerged—perhaps it was because he finally had something he resolved to do, which began the coming-of-age for many young people. However, there was something a little different: those youths were determined to choose their future, whereas he was determined to search for a person’s past.

Seeing him return, that woman’s icy gaze swept over like a knife, only slightly mellowing when she saw Lin Si was not with him.

Although it mellowed, it was still cold. “Is there anything else?”

Ling Yi faced her gaze without flinching, his own calm and restrained.

“I am Ye Selin’s son,” he said slowly.

Then, he saw the cold expression in the woman’s eyes turn into surprise, into disbelief, then finally…finally, into elation!

“Ye Selin’s child!” Her eyes widened. “Ling Yi, little Ling Yi, is it you? I heard your mother mention your name before. Her child is still alive!”

“Child, her child…” She was captivated by Ling Yi, muttering, “you always followed your dad around, so you barely showed your face and nobody recognised you. Who would’ve thought you’d grow up on the spaceship…”

Then, she naturally thought of those rumours regarding Lin Si, about how Lin Si adopted a boy who was an experiment sample for “limitless”.

At that time, she thought thag adopting an experiment sample was nothing more than an extra convenient way of studying them. No matter how everyone described Lin Si’s harmonious relationship with the child, it was all a sham—the poor kid.

Ling Yi felt slight discomfort under her gaze, and moved back a few steps.

“Let me look at you…” She moved forward, looking at Ling Yi, then her expression became serious. “How can you stay with Lin Si? Does he think taking care of you can absolve his sins?”

Her tone was firm. “Baby, you need to leave Lin Si as soon as possible. Stay with us.”

Since small, he had been called “baby” by many people on the spaceship, but this time, he felt unwilling to be called such.

He knew he was likeable to others, but that woman had given him the cold shoulder just moments ago, just because he was someone who accompanied Lin Si.

Whereas now that she knew his mother was Ye Selin, she suddenly began to act emotional.

He truly had no memories of what Ye Selin was like and how she influenced others, therefore, he could not judge whether this woman’s change in attitude was right or wrong. However, when it came to the people who did not treat Lin Si well, he did not want to treat them well either.

Ling Yi looked at her and said, “I’m here to see Su Ting. I don’t remember anything that happened on Earth.”

“Su Ting, yes, there’s still Su Ting…” The woman walked towards the rows and rows of sleeping cabins. “Come with me.”

The procedure to defrost the human body was very complicated, in which every change in the parameters needed to be dealt with by a new solution, hence not everything could be handled by machines and needed an experienced awakener—such as this woman.

The other woman also came over. Although she did not say much, Lin Si also sensed that her attitude had become much more gentle.

They travelled to the third floor and through many cabin rooms, until they arrived at Su Ting’s cabin.

The extreme low-temperature sleeping cabin was flooded with an icy light blue, and on the surface, some strangely-shaped ice crystals condensed. The young brunette woman’s blood was completely drawn from her body and exchanged with a special sleeping fluid, resulting in her skin appearing in a translucent white.

Exchanging blood, controlling temperature, stimulating awakening…The procedure was highly strict, and the two women’s operation was highly systematic, every instant demonstrating that they knew the ropes very well.

At last, the temperature inside the cabin rose from two-digits below zero to room temperature, and Su Ting’s face gradually became a rosy hue, like she had become a living person once more.

Several robotic arms reached over, continuously pressing and stimulating her skin with the purpose of aiding her blood circulation, while waking her up at the same time.

Around half an hour later, Su Ting gradually opened her eyes.

She first stared at the ceiling, staring for a long time, before turning her head to look at other places and saw the three people standing by her cabin.

She opened her mouth, but it seemed like she lost her voice. It was not until after another long while that she was able to produce some sound.

“I woke up…” she said. “Have we, have we landed? Or do you need me to work?”

“Lin Si needs an assistant for a project,” the woman replied.

“Shixiong…” She blinked. After a while, she reacted like she had just processed the information. “Shouldn’t shixiong be back on Earth?”

The woman made a “hmph” noise coldly.

Su Ting turned towards Ling Yi, revealing her first smile since she woke. “Are you Lingling? I remember you. We met once back on earth, where we…let me think, we planted some cat grass together. Do you still remember me? I didn’t think you’d be on the spaceship too. Where is your mother, is she working with Lin Si?”

When she finished, her eyes began to exude colour, and her entire body seemed to glow with liveliness. She tried to support her body to sit upright. “They must’ve been really busy, so they didn’t come to see me wake up… Madam, how do I quickly recover back to normal?”

The woman helped her up and opened her mouth to speak, but Ling Yi was faster.

“Lin Si is doing a solo research project on brain microchips. He needs your help.”

He deliberately spoke before that woman. She was too antagonistic towards Lin Si, so he could not let her misguide Su Ting.

“You’re right, I specialise in this area.” Su Ting smiled weakly. “Shixiong knows me very well.”

After speaking, she continued adamantly to ask that question she had asked before. “Lingling, where’s Ye Selin? Is she working on the ship? Or is she sleeping?”

Ling Yi said, “She…isn’t on the ship.”

Su Ting’s face turned ghastly white.

The woman that was interrupted laughed coldly. “You better go ask your shixiong why!”

Ling Yi frowned at her.

The woman immediately understood—this boy had meant to protect Lin Si!

She immediately became vigilant.

Their gazes overlapped with each other, with the intention of crossing swords.

And in between the two—

“How come?” Su Ting muttered. “It’s impossible, since I boarded the ship with Ye Selin……”

A novel is a mirror walking along a main road. Stories are the way we make sense of the chaos of existence.

The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.
