Chapter 29 – No Meaning in Anchoring (5)

Su Ting’s entire body was quivering like she was on the verge of breaking down. Or perhaps she had broken down already.

She did not shed tears and only stared blankly at the void.

She suddenly thought of something, then looked at the woman. “You said just now—shixiong, shixiong—he discovered a way to defeat the virus! Ye Selin—was Ye Selin saved!”

“The confidentiality was very high, so I don’t know myself,” the woman said, “but Ye Selin was not on the spaceship. From the moment I woke, I searched for her all this time, but she wasn’t among the people who were frozen, nor among the living people on the spaceship. All her information was destroyed with not even a single photo left, she—”

There came a moment when she was speechless too, where her eyes glittered with tears. It made her look less insufferable than before.

She reached over to hold the frail Su Ting.

Su Ting leaned on her shoulder, looking dazedly at the hall that resembled a graveyard, muttering, “Ye Selin…”

Ye Selin.

That was a name that held great meaning for them.

When anyone saw the attitude these people held towards Ye Selin, they would all be curious about what kind of person she was, and why she would possess such profound beauty, such that when she left this world, innumerable hatred, sorrow, and nostalgia would surge out, until now, even over a century later, it still echoed.

Lin Si went silent for a moment, then left Area 9.

He wanted to see Lin Si.

His black leather boots on the empty corridor invigorated echoes of his footsteps, the cool white lighting warped around his figure.

He ran through the hallways and arrived at Area 6, but he could not see even a shadow of Lin Si there.

He slowed to a stop, taking out his 3D monitor.

The golden-haired female knight gradually appeared in front of him.

“Ling Yi, long time no see,” Lucia greeted him, “how can I help you?”

“Thanks,” said Ling Yi, “I want to know where Lin Si is.”

“Platform b79.” The information flowed quickly across Lucia’s network that was spread across the entire spaceship, and results showed quickly.

“Alright,” replied Ling Yi.

Platform b79 was located at the rear of the spaceship, it was a transparent observatory deck, a place that allowed one to believe they were situated among the sea of stars.

Stargazing was like drinking a strong liquor , as both were ways that allowed a person to forget their pain. Alcohol would empty a person’s mind, while the vast and boundless, yet eternally still sea of stars would make people aware of how small, how insignificant they and their emotions were.

Knowing that Lin Si was there, Ling Yi was not as hurried as before.

He walked towards the corridor that led to the platform, asking Lucia, “Do you know Ye Selin?”

Lucia closed her eyes.

She’s searching the database, Ling Yi thought.

Around twenty seconds later, Lucia opened her eyes.

“I know,” she said. “Would you like to see an image of Ye Selin?”

He could…look directly at her image? Didn’t that woman say that all data on Ye Selin was destroyed?

Perhaps it was because that woman’s authority level was not high enough, or perhaps she was telling a lie.

The words “I want to look” nearly left Ling Yi’s mouth, but a seemingly spiritual, instinctive feeling of danger stopped him.

This instinctive feeling often occurred to him in situations like when he was facing an attack or in a dangerous situation, but it was particularly strong at this moment.

“I’m… I’m good.” His voice sounded a little dry.

All of a sudden, his heart began to beat violently.

He knew that Ye Selin was great, and that was enough. One person had to keep their head clear when Ye Selin’s influence was too vast. Sometimes, things that were overly good were dangerous, this was what Lin Si taught him.

“Alright,” said Lucia.

Ling Yi walked towards the platform.

But Lucia suddenly spoke again.

“According to my calculations on your personality, when you’re older and more mature, there is a ninety-seven percent chance you’ll be extremely similar to her.”

“Sure…” Ling Yi looked at his own muddled silhouette that was reflected on a piece of smooth metal surface.

“I will negotiate with Area 1. Moreover, Madam,”—as he approached, he heard Lin Si’s voice from ahead—“if you still insist on it, I will believe that you have other plans for the ship’s future.”

“If it’s a serious mistake, it certainly needs to be corrected.”

“I’m okay with afternoon, I’ll see you in Area 1.”

Ling Yi waited until Lin Si ended the call, then walked up to him.

“Lin Si.”

Lin Si turned to look at him.

The platform protruded from the ground; it was entirely transparent, including the flooring. From Ling Yi’s point of view, it looked like Lin Si was standing in the very centre of the sea of stars.

Ling Yi looked at him as he tentatively stepped on the transparent material.

He had only been here a few times, so he was still somewhat afraid.

Fortunately, Lin Si was watching him, so it made him a lot calmer.

When he approached, Lin Si said mildly, “How was Su Ting?”

“She’s not too well.” Ling Yi told the truth obediently. “After hearing Ye Selin was no longer here, she became very sad.”

Lin Si looked at his eyes.

Ling Yi looked back, and saw those very cold, very still eyes, at this moment looking slightly out of sorts.

He said, “That woman misunderstood you… she said you infected Ye Selin with the virus and caused her to die so you could get on the spaceship.”

Finally, some laughter appeared in Lin Si’s eyes. “How do you know it’s a misunderstanding?”

“You like Ye Selin so much, and Lin Si is a very good person…” said Ling Yi.

“You’re the only one who thinks that,” said Lin Si.

“But I know I’m right! Why won’t you explain to them?” asked Ling Yi.

“If you had your past memories, and you heard the news of Ye Selin’s death, you would also loathe me like she does,” said Lin Si.

“Was Ye Selin good to me?” asked Ling Yi.

“Ye Selin was good to everyone.”

Lin Si looked into Ling Yi’s beautiful eyes—those eyes that reflected the dazzling milky way. At the end of that river floated a layer of white mist that drifted, swiftly drowning his vision.

And when that mist dispersed, what emerged as a scene from his memories.

That day was sunny and clear. The sky above the city was usually covered in a thick, heavy dust-haze, so it had been over half a year since there was sunshine so bright that it shone unbridledly. It was even somewhat blinding when he looked out of the window.

Rays of sunlight broke through between the window frames, into the old, antique-style library which seldom people came to, shining upon the dancing dusts in the air.

When Lin Si arrived, he did not expect someone else to already be there. The seat he usually occupied was taken by someone; there was a delicate, ashy pink notebook placed there, and a white jacket was draped on the back of the seat.

He sat down on the opposite side, and began to read his own academic texts.

Around ten minutes later, light footsteps rang out from beside him, and the air seemed to disperse a fragrance from faraway, lasting and warm.

The owner of the fragrance sat down opposite of him, a poetry collection by Gibran in her hands.10

It was a woman, who looked like she was in her thirties and had partial Asian ancestry. She had long black hair that went past her shoulders, which appeared as a warm brown colour under the sunlight. Her aura was very quiet and gentle, like a professor from the humanities faculty.

Lin Si glanced at her once, then his attention went back to the book in front of him.

In an instant, the only sounds that existed were the sounds of page-turning and the rustling of paper against paper.

The sun gradually moved to the centre of the sky. After an unknown period of time, the tip of Lin Si’s pen paused slightly.

He was reading a famous text on neurology by a renowned author. Its level was very high, but this section he was reading in particular made him feel slightly off.

“This section of the book has some minor flaws, so there’s actually a second edition published.” At this moment, he heard the madam sitting across speak. “But it was lost in the war. I think you might be interested in knowing the correct viewpoint.”

Lin Si raised his head, only to meet her gaze, then realised this madam had been observing him the whole time.

This sort of observation was not impolite—at the very least, if she was the one who did it.

Her gaze was very gentle. When she looked at Lin Si, it was like an elder who was looking at their beloved child.

“You’ve seen the second edition?” asked Lin Si.

The madam smiled. “I edited the second edition.”

She told Lin Si about the correct viewpoint, her explanation clear and elegant, allowing him to sense the depth of learning she cultivated. Lin Si became sure that she was a senior in this field.

When the lecture ended, Lin Si said, “I’ve never seen you around the school.”

The madam looked at him with great interest. “Are you from the school of medicine?”

“Yes,” said Lin Si.

“I also studied medicine when I was young,” said the madam, “but I changed to biology, and I’m still currently in that field of research. Maybe that is the reason why we’ve never met.”

She smiled again. “However, even when it comes to med students, not many have read that book, since its approach is a little obscure. Do you like the occupation of a doctor?”

Lin Si nodded.

He thought about how the madam had said she changed her field, and asked, “Do you not like it?”

“I do, very much… Since I was small, I knew I would become a doctor.” She smiled, her left hand gently rubbing the ring on her right ring finger, then continued. “But later on my health worsened, so I became unsuited for jobs that required energy and stamina. Then, I heard a saying…”

She blinked at Lin Si. “A magnificent doctor can save up to hundreds or thousands of people during their lifetime. A researcher, if they can overcome a disease or a troublesome virus, can save up to thousands, or even millions during their lifetime. Therefore, you could say that I haven’t given up on my dream.”

—That was the first time he met Ye Selin.

The path of fate was unlike a straight railway path, which allowed one to press forward indomitably towards a single destination. Sometimes, it was more like a desert, so that when you walked through it, you would never be aware of the instant you had begun to deviate from the original route.

A novel is a mirror walking along a main road. Stories are the way we make sense of the chaos of existence.

The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.
