Chapter 30 – No Meaning in Anchoring (6)

The past memories were vibrant and dazzling, but the words he used to narrate ultimately made it appear more plain, so to Ling Yi, Lin Si had only described a regular encounter to him.

But the change brought about by this encounter was very grand—Ling Yi could imagine, if Lin Si did not meet Ye Selin in that old library, he would have become a magnificent doctor just like he had always dreamed of, and when the virus arrived, he’d save people, then die on that Earth.

ā€œSo you decided to become her student from then on?ā€ asked Ling Yi.

ā€œNot yet,ā€ Lin Si replied. ā€œAt that time she only left a deep impression on me, then we met a few times after that…but becoming her student only happened two years later.ā€

Moving back on topic, Lin Si said, ā€œEven though I’ve never seen the two of you together, she must’ve been a good mother.ā€

ā€œLucia said that based on her calculations on my personality, I’ll grow up to be a lot like her.ā€

ā€œSo her functions have already become so powerful.ā€ Lin Si appraised Lucia first, then looked at Ling Yi.

The ship’s environment was, truthfully, very disadvantageous for a child’s growth. With limited space and a monotonous lifestyle devoid of socialisation or a peer of the same age, it was very easy for one to become isolated.

But none of these things happened to Ling Yi at all. Rather, even during the most peaceful times on Earth, even with the best education, seldom any children would turn out like him.

He was a very lively, energetic boy, while at the same time, had a very gentle, earnest personality. He was very obedient, yet independent enough. Lin Si could not find a single fault in him; he was every madam’s dream son, every older brother’s dream younger sibling, every girl’s dream lover.

He had never encountered evil, and never held even a single drop of maliciousness towards anyone. Certainly, he was exactly like how the madams described him—a little angel.

If he grew older…he would certainly develop similar aspects to Ye Selin.

ā€œYou two are a little similar,ā€ he told Ling Yi, ā€œbut you love getting angry too much. Ye Selin would never get angry.ā€

ā€œI only get angry at you!ā€ Ling Yi’s voice raised to a higher pitch, the rims of his eyes turning slightly red. ā€œYou’re the only one who’s mean to me!ā€

Lin Si looked at his eyes, slightly surprised.

ā€œIf you treated me like the others did…I wouldn’t get angry at you!ā€ said Ling Yi. ā€œBut you like to make fun of me the most, force me to study… and sometimes you’d make people worry about you, like just now when you were in a bad mood and abandoned me!ā€

The little one’s eyes were faintly red. He looked like he was going to cry at any moment.

ā€œI didn’t even do anything wrong…I knew that it was because you were in a bad mood, because you were sad over Ye Selin, and sometimes you made fun of me because you like me, and I really did have to study those things, even soā€¦ā€

Lin Si saw that the little one was planning to tearfully accuse him, then attempt to absolve him with two or three words in the end. He felt a tug on his heart, a gradual ache arising from it.

He was still a child, not fully grown, not fully ready to face the multitudes of bad things in the world. A child like him always had the right to seek adoration.

ā€œI lost control.ā€ Lin Si explained to him.

ā€œWas it because she made you think of Ye Selin?ā€ asked Ling Yi.

Lin Si’s answer exceeded his expectations.

ā€œSomewhat. But more so, it was because of you,ā€ said Lin Si calmly.

ā€œAfter knowing about the incident, you would have more reason to hate me compared to anyone else, and I also don’t want to hide anything from you,ā€ Lin Si looked into his eyes. ā€œI know our relationship is close, but it’s built on the fact that you don’t know anything. Of course I also wish for this relationship to last, because you’re not the only one who has feelings, I do too.ā€

ā€œBut I won’t ignore you because of that,ā€ Ling Yi’s eyes shone with a watery gleam as he nodded firmly, ā€œYe Selin wouldn’t blame you either, that was an accident. You’re afraid I’ll hate you, becauseā€¦ā€

He paused, then said, ā€œBecause you hate yourself!ā€

Lin Si gazed at him, then went quiet for half a minute.

ā€œWhat if I really am not innocent?ā€ he said. ā€œYou still don’t know the entire truth. By the time you recover your past memories, and remember the affection you had for Ye Selinā€¦ā€

ā€œBut I don’t remember a single thing!ā€ Ling Yi cut him off. ā€œI don’t remember Earth, I don’t remember Ye Selin, I don’t feel anything towards her. It was you who raised me for three years, I only remember you!ā€

The tears fell unstoppingly from Ling Yi’s eyes as he looked at Lin Si.

ā€œThat’s why I’ll never do anything to make you sad. If I really end up remembering those things that would make me hate you, at most, I would only wish I never came hereā€¦ā€ His voice lowered to a very soft volume, and it contained a tearful grievance. ā€œI won’t get angry at you from now on, I’ll study properly, but you have to treat me better, Iā€¦ā€

Lin Si was stunned.

Large drops after large drops of tears fell from Ling Yi’s red eyes as he sobbed and sobbed. But he did not wipe them away, and only heartbrokenly and stubbornly stared at Lin Si .

Any normal person, when they saw this scene in front of them, would not be able to hold back from comforting him with tender affection, as if their own heart had shattered along with the tears that fell to the ground.

Lin Si reached his hand to wipe Ling Yi’s tears. The moment those fingers that wanted to tell him ā€œit’s okayā€ came into contact with his face, Ling Yi began to cry even more violently.

Lin Si reached out to hug him.

Ling Yi hugged him back tightly, buried his face in Lin Si’s shoulder, and cried until he was out of breath.

Lin Si’s throat felt sour. He patted his back gently. ā€œI’m sorry. Don’t cry. Be goodā€¦ā€

Ling Yi had cried too hard, so he sobbed for another good while before he finally stopped.

His pretty eyes were bright red. The tip of his nose had also reddened slightly.

Lin Si took his hand. Those hands that were usually warm had become cold.

He held Ling Yi’s hands in the palms of his own.

ā€œI’ll control my emotions from now on,ā€ he said.

ā€œThat…that’s not what I want.ā€ Ling Yi lowered his eyelids. ā€œI just wanted to make you feel a bit happier, I didn’t want you to keep thinking about those things. The virus leaking out wasn’t your fault, so why haven’t you let go all this time?ā€

ā€œIt’s not that simple.ā€ Lin Si cupped his face, meeting his gaze directly. ā€œI wasn’t completely guiltless, and the consequences were far worse than you imagine.ā€

ā€œThen…what was it?ā€ asked Ling Yi, almost completely calmed down.

ā€œAt that time, the virus had spread everywhere on earth. The laboratory’s work was at its most urgent period, we were only a little bit away from overcoming the virus. That’s why I didn’t even have time to find Ye Selin to say goodbye, she had to come find me herself… afterwards, half a day after she boarded the ship, I suddenly received a message from Madam Chen, who said they needed help from the laboratoryā€”ā€ Lin Si paused, organising his words, but at this moment his communication bracelet rang out.

The person who called was Zheng Shu.

Lin Si intercepted the call. Pulling Ling Yi’s hand, he headed in the direction of Area 5.

ā€œThe microchip programme can proceed as normal—I negotiated with Madam Chen just now. We only need to communicate with Area 1 to get back our materials.ā€

ā€œI’m not sure about the collection scheme, but Madam Chen seems to have other thoughts. I think she’s feeling anxious about our future—unless the Voyagers travel endlessly to other planets to extract minerals, our materials won’t be enough for everyone.ā€

ā€œWe’ll be there soon. Ling Yi is here too.ā€

When Lin Si cut the call, Ling Yi asked, ā€œAre we going to test the Skeletons?ā€

Lin Si made an affirmative noise. ā€œThey’ll poke a lot of needles in you. Don’t be afraid.ā€

Ling Yi stuck out his tongue, a little embarrassed.

They were somewhat late because of the things that happened just now. Upon arrival, they saw a cool-looking, black-coloured robot walk over to them.

ā€œLittle Lingling!ā€ The Colonel’s hearty voice rang out. ā€œYou’re also here! Come try out the armour!ā€

ā€œā€¦ā€ Ling Yi did not reply.

The Skeleton looked very cool, but the Colonel was not very proficient in controlling it, so his movements looked a little ridiculous.

Then, when he walked to Ling Yi’s side, he lost his balance and fell.

The metal and the smooth flooring collided, producing a heavy crashing sound.

The few mechanics exchanged looks. In their eyes were despair—an art piece, this was an art piece. Of course they would feel heartbroken if it was tossed around like that.

The Colonel tried to stand up again with effort, sadly to no avail. With four limbs facing the sky, he looked like a giant toad that was unable to flip itself over.

Savina carefully controlled her steps and walked to the Colonel’s side. She wanted to bend down, but stopped—she was afraid she would not be able to help him up, and would even trip and fall herself in the end.

At last, the mechanic could not bear to see it go on, and remotely controlled the Skeleton so the Colonel could stand up.

Zheng Shu laughed. ā€œTake your time to adjust. We’ll also continue to improve the reflex system.ā€

He looked at the last Skeleton, turning to Ling Yi, ā€œLingling, go try that one.ā€

Ling Yi walked to the front of the Skeleton and examined it curiously.

Zheng Shu walked close and noticed Ling Yi’s complexion looked off, as if he had just cried.

He looked at Lin Si questioningly.

Lin Si ruffled Ling Yi’s hair. ā€œHe threw a small tantrum.ā€

Zheng Shu smiled with understanding. ā€œLooks like you’ve cheered him up already.ā€

Ling Yi pouted.

ā€œHave you learnt the components?ā€ Lin Si asked Ling Yi.

Ling Yi nodded.

When he first arrived on the spaceship, he received a diagram of the Skeleton’s components that Zheng Shu handed out to anyone who participated in the tests. If they wanted to operate it smoothly, they needed to first understand its composition.

The assistant who was originally in charge of inserting the probes walked over, retrieving a transmission wire from the interior of the Skeleton. They were extremely small, and differed in length, but they were all longer than five centimetres and connected to the probes.

ā€œPrepare yourself,ā€ said the assistant.

Ling Yi looked alarmingly at the needle in his hand.

Lin Si smiled. ā€œLet me do it.ā€

The little one was afraid of pain, in particular needles, but it also depended on the person.

It was already better for Lin Si to do it. If it was someone else, the fear, grievance, and helplessness in Ling Yi’s eyes would torment anyone.

The nape, the spine, the shoulder joints, these were the areas of the central nervous system where the most nerves concentrated, and needed to be inserted with probes in order to ensure the Skeleton could obtain complete signals of the body’s movements.

Ling Yi looked at the thin and long, silver probe that had been disinfected, which was picked up by Lin Si’s hand.

Lin Si’s—very good-looking hand, slender fingers, and touch that was always slightly cool.

He found himself always unconsciously noticing Lin Si’s hands. Furthermore, he would begin to feel slightly anxious, and his heartbeat would quicken.

—Maybe it was because he had been pricked too many times by the needles held by them.

A novel is a mirror walking along a main road. Stories are the way we make sense of the chaos of existence.

The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.
