Chapter 36 – The Second Law of Thermodynamics (5)
This morning, Ling Yi opened his eyes first.
This was rare, as it was usually Lin Si who woke up before him.
The first rays of the early morning sun appeared as a translucent gold on the edges of the window. Ling Yi stared at Lin Si’s face for a good while, reaching his hand to hover it above Lin Si’s eyes, so that the sunlight would not shine into them and wake him up.
His palm seemed to have touched Lin Si’s eyelashes, feeling a slight itch.
His heartbeat was a little erratic. Ling Yi did not know why he felt so happy.
He had a very long and very strange dream, on that wreckage where building ruins laid everywhere, he kept moving forward, trying to close the distance with the Lin Si from faraway.
Dreams sometimes reflected the subconsciousness, Ling Yi knew that. He thought he must have wanted to become even closer to Lin Si.
However, they were already very close—why would he still think that? Was there a kind of relationship where they could be even closer than how they are now?
Ling Yi tilted his head, lost.
But that feeling of dissatisfaction was tangled up in his heart for too long. He looked at Lin Si again, and felt that right now was very good already.
Lin Si did not sleep for very long, he opened his eyes, and saw Ling Yi looking at him, his back facing the window, blocking the somewhat blinding sunlight.
“Thanks,” he said.
Ling Yi’s eyes curved up as he smiled at him.
As one aged, the shape of their eyes would change as well. The round almond eyes he had when he was small stretched longer, the corners of his eyes lifted upwards slightly, exhibiting a gentle yet playful beauty.
After he got out of bed and washed up, Lin Si went back to his messages that had piled up from last night, while Ling Yi hugged a pillow as he looked at his training schedule.
He only thought about his bracelet after a very long time, and did not expect he would have over ten notifications that popped out of his screen.
Ling Yi frowned; this had never happened to him before.
He opened them one by one. The most recent message was a picture Svena sent of the Colonel who attempted to wear the Skeleton during his daily life, and as a result got stuck in the doorframe when he went to the bathroom in the morning.
He replied with “hahaha”, and continued to scroll upwards.
It was still Svena. “Happy birthday, our little baby!”
The other messages had roughly the same content. Ling Yi realised that today was the birth date that was written on his identity document.
He replied to each message earnestly, but when he scrolled to the very top, it did not appear to be a birthday congratulation.
Unexpectedly, it was Tang Ning. The message time was three o’clock in the morning, “How have you guys been lately?”
Ling Yi thought about it, Tang Ning did not seem like the type to check up on his friends’ situation, so he replied, “Not that busy lately. Zheng Shu isn’t very tired.”
Tang Ning almost instantly replied. “K.”
Even though he sent the message at 3am, he was still awake at this time. It seemed like he had stayed up all night, busy with programming.
Although Tang Ning was famously an expert at being a night owl, all-nighters were still bad for him.
So Ling Yi replied, “You feeling good?”
Tang Ning replied, “I’m good.”
Ling Yi thought, if it was him who pulled all-nighters every night like Tang Ning, Lin Si would definitely disapprove, so he sent a response. “Zheng Shu will worry about you.”
But Tang Ning only replied plainly with a few words. “He won’t.”
Ling Yi hugged his pillow, a little perplexed.
He then thought more, and recalled that Zheng Shu really did seem to not treat Tang Ning too well.
It was not bad, only relatively cold.
Furthermore, Tang Ning wanted to know Zheng Shu’s current situation, but didn’t directly ask the person himself and instead chose to message Ling Yi.
He didn’t know how to reply.
Another good while passed, then Tang Ning sent a message. “Happy birthday.”
It was within expectations that other people he was close to knew his birthday, but it was truly strange that the kind of person who would never have contact with the outside world like Tang Ning somehow also knew!
Ling Yi replied, “How did you know?”
Tang Ning said, “I saw your info.”
Ling Yi: “…”
He realised that Tang Ning still had his photographic memory ability, where he only needed to sweep his eyes over something to carve it deeply into his brain. If he needed it, he would simply replay it. It was completely unbelievable.
Lin Si seemed to be like that too.
Ling Yi secretly glanced at Lin Si and saw that he was still replying to his messages.
Maybe he was going to be busy again.
As expected, after Lin Si typed his last message, he said to Ling Yi, “Area 1 wants me to look at something, I’ll only be back in the evening.”
Ling Yi was a little disappointed. “Okay.”
Lin Si rubbed his hair. “I’ll give you something tonight.”
Ling Yi’s eyes instantly brightened.
So Lin Si not only remembered his birthday, but also prepared a present?
He decided to forgive Lin Si for being absent for most of today.
The morning hours passed in an instant, Lin Si left for Area 1 very soon. That programme not only borrowed Tang Ning, but also borrowed Lin Si, it seemed like it was very impressive.
When Ling Yi arrived at the training hall, he was immediately hugged by Svena by the shoulder. “Baby! You’ll be an adult after today!”
The others also crowded over, fooling around for a while before they began their usual training.
During break time, without Lin Si by his side, Ling Yi felt a little bored, so he began to read his biology texts—this was also part of the learning Lin Si planned for him.
This section discussed energy, including some very simple laws of thermodynamics and formulas, and lastly, even raised examples as evidence—for instance, why perpetual motion would fail.
However, those were problems that only people on Earth many years ago would think about. Now that they had a third-generation nuclear fusion technique, they only needed hydrogen atoms to infinitely generate electricity, and naturally did not need to worry about energy issues as well. Therefore, things such as “perpetual motion” had lost their practical meaning, so Ling Yi only skimmed over it, then flipped to the next chapter.
When he finished reading the things prescribed today, he had nothing to do once again.
Ling Yi thumped around a few times frustratedly—he really missed Lin Si. Then he finally got up to exchange moves with the Colonel.
As he grew bigger, he became more familiar with controlling his power, and by now, he could already consciously control the strength of his strike—in other words, he could lower his strength to the level of a normal person, purely testing his techniques with the Colonel.
Without Lin Si’s guidance from the side, the Colonel failed his game’s mission too many times and was also bored-to-tears, so he instantly clicked with Ling Yi, both raising their arms to fight.
The training staff here were also from the military, so they were already eager to fight. After Ling Yi and the Colonel made a head start, not long after, the originally lifeless training hall had turned into a large fighting arena.
Zheng Shu walked in from the entrance. Seeing the scene before him, he placed his hand on his forehead.
Ling Yi peeked out from behind the Colonel, smiling as he greeted him, “Good afternoon, Mr Zheng.”
His voice was sweet, his expression was also good, looking very harmless.
—If not for those two hands that were locked around the Colonel’s throat.
“Good afternoon, Ling Yi.” Zheng Shu nodded, still sounding as calm and steady as before.
“Mr Zheng,” the Colonel said to him, “do you want to go?”
“I haven’t trained for a long time,” Zheng Shu laughed as he shook his head. “How could you tell?”
“Trained people and untrained people are different,” said the Colonel. “Experts can tell at a glance.”
“You’re really impressive,” said Zheng Shu.
“I led the special forces for over a decade,” said the Colonel.
“The special forces where?”
“In Los Angeles,” said the Colonel.
“Los Angeles?” Zheng Shu suddenly laughed.
The Colonel looked at a loss. “Huh?”
“My fiancée was there.”
“Oh…” said the Colonel, “but the base is outside the city, so I’m not exactly considered from there.”
“She isn’t either.” Zheng Shu finished speaking, unbuttoned his jacket and took it off, placing it on the back of a chair, then he took off his wristwatch that would affect his movements, and said to the Colonel, “Come.”
Zheng Shu’s physique was very good, unlike the Colonel who had a burly body. In addition with his charismatic, steady and calm gentlemanly aura, he appeared to be an extremely charming man, but Ling Yi had really never thought that Zheng Shu was someone who used to professionally train in combat.
Seeing that his opening moves were very professional and accurate, the Colonel broke into a smile. “Actually, I could tell from very early on, but I never found the chance this whole time.”
Zheng Shu said, “I learnt it from someone when I was young.”
The Colonel nodded, made a combat stance, and just like the first time he exchanged moves with Ling Yi, he threw a punch directly at Zheng Shu’s face.
Zheng Shu relaxed his body, threw out his elbow to meet the Colonel’s left fist, and at the same time he kicked out to attack the Colonel’s right knee.
The Colonel let out an “eh” and retracted his right foot to step back, changing into a defensive stance.
The rhythm of this match was not quick because the Colonel held back. After all, Zheng Shu was a normal person, and was a researcher on top of that, so he obviously could not be compared to a genetically-modified body. After a few dozens of moves, the two separated in tacit agreement.
“That was quite interesting.” Zheng Shu adjusted his shirt colour and smiled gently. “I’m thinking of whether to pick up combat again.”
“Your combat teacher is impressive, it resembles a military-style,” said the Colonel.
“My fiancée taught me,” said Zheng Shu.
“A woman?” The Colonel suddenly looked like he just saw the light. “No wonder it was a bit awkward-looking for you the whole time.”
He finished speaking, frowned, then abruptly looked at Ling Yi. “I remember!”
“Huh?” said Ling Yi.
“Not only is it awkward, it’s also familiar—so it was you!” said the Colonel. “Both of your moves are too similar. It’s like you were taught by the same teacher.”
The Colonel looked at Zheng Shu suspiciously, then looked at Ling Yi.
Although his brain did not work very well, he had expertise regarding these things, in particular with Ling Yi and Zheng Shu’s case—who only trained and did not develop their own style from real combat experience. No matter how much they trained, they would still leave a trace of their teacher’s style in their moves.
Moreover, these two were certainly similar.
Lin Si knitted his pretty brows together and made an effort to recall.
Regarding Zheng Shu’s fiancée, he also heard mentions of her from a long time ago. It seemed like it was Zheng Shu who mentioned it himself?
At that time when he just boarded the spaceship, during that celebratory banquet, Zheng Shu introduced him and Lin Si’s relationship, and said his fiancée was…Lin Si’s mentor’s daughter?
Back then, he did not know his own background, so he did not take it to heart, and slowly forgot about it.
—Now that he thought about it again, was she not his older sister?
