Chapter 42 – Cycle and Begin Again (4)

“???” Ling Yi widened his eyes.

He only waited until he was the last one! How was he late!

But Lin Si really did pack away the low-temperature box, and said mildly, “I won’t punish you, but you need to remember next time.”

Ling Yi: “???”

The pair of beautiful eyes immediately watered.

Lin Si laughed softly.

Even after three years, this little one was still too fun to tease. Whenever he was tricked, he would not know how to retort, and immediately made an aggrieved expression like he wanted to cry.

Fortunately, Lin Si still possessed an insignificant, tiny bit of conscience, so he would not tease him for too long.

“You’re not part of this to begin with,” Lin Si said, taking off his transparent gloves, “a child’s brain is still developing, so it’ll be affected by the microchip.”

Ling Yi did not accept this explanation, “I’m already an adult!”

Lin Si stood, then moved his hand to tilt Ling Yi’s chin up, examining him carefully.

The jawline that belonged to a young teenage boy was still round and cute. His mildly warm skin was soft.

“According to your age, you should be an adult,” Lin Si looked into Ling Yi’s eyes, speaking slowly and clearly from a very close distance, “but in reality, your voice hasn’t even changed yet. Classmate, you’ve been late for quite a while already.”

Ling Yi glared at him then whipped his head away, the tip of his ears reddening again.

—How could Lin Si be so infuriating!

Wait until he was completely grown up—he would definitely bully back all the times Lin Si bullied him!

After letting go, Lin Si retracted his hand and no longer continued to bully him, even looking slightly distracted. Ling Yi felt a sense of disappointment again.

Reluctantly, he called out “hey”.

His voice was a warm, smooth, clear softness, finishing on a silken timbre.

Lin Si was thinking of Ling Yi’s condition. He had already seen Ling Yi’s body check results—there was no abnormality in his body, only that his hormone levels were still at the levels of an adolescence.

It was purely the case of puberty arriving late.

The situation should be blamed on the accidental mutation caused by that incident, but Lin Si never discovered the principles behind it, so he could only wait and see.

Moreover, the state of Ling Yi’s various tissues were still gradually changing, which included his brain tissues. If he compared it to programming, then everyone else’s programming would remain the same, but the programming of Ling Yi’s body was still continuously, unceasingly undergoing self-optimisation.

This time, even Lin Si himself could not resist his desire to strap this little cat on the dissection table and study him closely.

Hearing the “hey”, he shifted his gaze back to Ling Yi. “When you’ve finished puberty completely, we can consider the microchip…but you might need another two or three years, so just use the probe Skeletons for now.”

Hearing that he still had to use the probe Skeletons, Ling Yi despaired. “I still have to get stabbed so many times!”

“The Skeleton’s adjustments are complete. You can choose to not use them.” Lin Si leaned back on his seat.

“Then I’ll be so weak!” Ling Yi gave his final struggle.

“Your reasoning cannot convince me. I believe you might not even need the Skeletons anymore,” Lin Si said flatly as he wrote on the form he was submitting to the Marshal. “From what I heard, when I wasn’t here, you played dangerous games like fighting barehanded with the Colonel without Skeletons. I’ve been wanting to address both your behaviours for a very long time.”

Ling Yi’s flames of frustration were immediately extinguished. His gaze began to wander.

Currently adjusting to the microchip Skeletons, the hairs on the Colonel’s back suddenly raised when he heard the sentence “I’ve been wanting to address both your behaviours”.

—What a joke, what kind of things could Lin Si even address with Ling Yi? As if he wouldn’t just hold him down and rub him a few times, then they would buzz off together again?

Lin Si was the real danger here!

He only wanted to test little Ling Yi’s limits when nobody was around. Furthermore, he also did not win!

Lin Si adjusted his thin, silver-framed glasses that were perched on the bridge of his nose, then expressionlessly glanced in the Colonel’s direction.

He saw Colonel’s cool, mighty black robot quickly shrink to a small size, its movements becoming agile and swift. Like a large spider, it clung to the ground and crawled away to somewhere Lin Si could not see.

The few mechanics exchanged glances, mutually deciding to be more careful and prudent in the future. They absolutely could not incur the wrath of his lordship, the legendary warlock.

Ling Yi timidly made a “hmph” sound. “I didn’t win, but I wasn’t hurt…”

Lin Si put away his documents and said, “I’m not disapproving of you engaging in these kinds of challenges, but you need to accurately assess the risks before deciding whether you want to try these things. Assessing is easy, you only need to ask Lucia.”

“I understand,” Ling Yi nodded obediently, then said, “but at that time I felt it was safe. My feelings are very accurate.”

Lin Si made a sound of acknowledgement, then said flatly, “What if there was a day where the machine’s judgement and your intuition are the opposite?”

Ling Yi pondered seriously.

“Up till now, my feelings have never been wrong,” he concluded.

Lin Si said, “But machines have never been wrong either.”

Ling Yi shook his head, slightly vexed.

“Go train. We can talk later,” said Lin Si.

Ling Yi nodded.

Lin Si prepared the documents to submit to Marshal.

Ling Yi’s intuition was always very sharp and accurate, as such, he always put his faith in it. That was why Lin Si thought of this potential problem, but the possibility of such a situation occurring in the future was miniscule, so he did not tear himself apart over it.

While walking in the corridors in Area 3, he suddenly received Madam Chen’s call on his communication bracelet.

“Lin, can you come over for a bit?”

Lin Si did not know what Madam Chen needed him for, but he still submitted the documents quickly, then went around to Area 1.

Madam Chen sat behind her desk, smiling at Lin Si when he walked in, “How have you been lately?”

“Alright,” Lin Si’s response was very plain.

“You and Marshal’s relationship seems to have mellowed out a bit,” said Madam Chen, smiling, “I’m not too willing the accept the matter of the microchip either, but I’m happy that both of you made compromises and didn’t cause a larger dispute.”

Lin Si said, “I’ve made you worried.”

“This isn’t what I’m worried about lately,” said Madam Chen.

“What is it?”

Madam Chen withdrew her smile. She looked into his eyes. “Lin, are you sure you want to go on the Expeditioner?”

Lin Si was a little surprised that Madam Chen found out so quickly, but he did not express any emotion on his face and simply kept a calm voice. “Yes.”

Madam Chen said, “Have you thought over it seriously?”

Although she did not display outright rejection in her question, she was definitely not approving.

Contrary to what was expected, Lin Si did not think over the matter seriously. In fact, it was a rare occurrence for him to not do so.

“We do not plan to equip the Expeditioner with high-level scientific researchers and research facilities,” said Madam Chen slowly. “Many decisions made during surveillance and navigation can be made by Lucia alone. Moreover, the focal point of the Expeditioner is exploration, so you won’t be of much use, and even if you’re on the ship, you cannot organise a scientific research group of high efficiency, so you won’t make any significant contributions. The duration of the Expeditioner’s first voyage has been confirmed—it will last for at least ten years.”

She looked into Lin Si’s eyes. “You’re still young. These ten years with the most creativity, energy, and the most achievements for a scientist, if you choose to spend it on the Expeditioner, it will be the greatest loss for both you and the entire spaceship. I suggest you weigh the pros and cons, then mull over your decision thoroughly.”

A novel is a mirror walking along a main road. Stories are the way we make sense of the chaos of existence.

The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.
