Chapter 59 – When Dawn Breaks (3)

Ling Yi and Lin Si stuck together for a good while before they separated. Lin Si went to get pain medication, and the others were also informed that Ling Yi had woken up. After confirming that Ling Yi’s body was relatively unharmed, they began to question the specific symptoms caused by the virus in further detail, as well as the conditions of that planet. On the other side, a few researchers were reporting to Lin Si about their preliminary analysis on the virus.

“Results of the sample analysis have come out,” someone said. “Its shape is so unstable that it’s hard to come up with a specific definition.”

“We conducted preliminary analysis of the blood samples, and lean towards a gene virus.”

“Focus more on the sample analysis,” said Lin Si. “You should also observe the other people in the freezing cabins.”

The task was very strenuous. Long ago, on Earth, it often took many years for medicine to overcome a disease. But even now, even though various technological methodologies had leapt miles ahead, overcoming a virus was still an arduous process.

But fortunately, they had a wealth of experience from dealing with the Berlin virus, and this experience was equally as effective when applied to another type of gene virus. Yet, once it was confirmed that this thing was a gene virus, another puzzling question arose.

“If it is indeed a gene virus, the reason why we can’t analyse its specific shape is because we aren’t knowledgeable about the DNA structure it belongs to,” a woman said. “If so, how did it even appear? According to records and Ling Yi’s description, there were no signs of carbon-based life on that planet, only some strange life forms we can’t understand.”

This certainly was an issue. No matter the virus, it could only survive when attached to a living organism.

The Berlin virus was a type of gene virus. When the Berlin laboratory conducted human genetic modification experiments, an unexpected mutation occurred—which then gave birth to the devil of the Berlin virus. So then, where was the purple virus born from, if it was also a gene virus?

However, their primary aim was to find a cure, create a vaccine, then finally trace the source of the virus. This question was quickly shelved after a simple discussion.

For the many days to come, the focus of research was on Ling Yi, as well as the samples he left behind during his Voyage of over three years..

As such, Ling Yi interacted a lot with people from the laboratory every day.

The former Wilkins Laboratory was presided over by Ye Selin, so most of them knew Ling Yi’s name—seeing him now, they could not avoid thinking about their past on Earth.

In between research sessions, Ling Yi spoke with a woman.

He was wearing a light blue hospital gown, his face was a little pale and his long black hair draped down. There was a polite smile in his eyes, which made his image appear unusually gentle and quiet.

“If Ye Selin could see how you looked right now, she would definitely feel joy and relief,” said the woman. “As a guardian, Lin is up-to-standard.”

“Thanks.” Ling Yi let out a laugh.

“How do you feel right now?”

“I feel good,” said Ling Yi. “A lot better than before, and I haven’t fainted these past few days.”

“Your body has some really amazing qualities,” she said. “After we helped you balance some of your body metrics, it was a lot less burdened, so your tissues began to repair themselves.”

Ling Yi nodded, “I can feel it.”

“You have a very perfect body. I heard that your DNA is active and has been slowly developing in a favourable direction,” she said. Amazement could be detected in her voice, but any researcher involved in this field would understandably show great interest in Ling Yi’s body.

“It seems so,” Ling Yi smiled. “Do you want to study it? Lin Si has many records over there.”

“I’m already going to,” she said, “thankfully it’s Lin Si. If it were anyone else, they might have decided to dissect you.”

“Before, the people on the ship always suspected Lin Si did crazy experiments on me.” Ling Yi pondered and told her. “But Lin Si only did things like taking samples once in a while.”

Ling Yi had already grasped the current atmosphere of this laboratory—everyone trusted Lin Si very much, and had no doubts about his character, which was completely different from back when he was on the Voyager. On the Voyager, many people would think of Lin Si as like the genius but cold, mysterious scientist character in sci-fi novels who would not hesitate to do anything for his research. It sounded cool, but those characters were often villains.

“Lin’s changed a lot, he’s no longer the person from before. People who don’t know him will have many misunderstandings about him.” The woman’s eyes were downcast. “It’s the same with people like us. We can’t go back to the past anymore.”

Ling Yi knew why she said that, and could understand their feelings well. Not everything could be forgiven. This voyage had a great purpose, but it would always have a starting point that was stained full with blood and could not be openly known by others.

Suddenly, the collection of poems that he had seen at Zheng Shu’s a long, long time ago floated to his mind. The collection of poems contained something similar to a diary. Those things had gradually faded out of his memory, but in the three years he was infected with the virus, whenever he passed out, the past would always appear in his dreams, as such, he remembered it again.

The person who wrote the letter said that they were guilty. An innocent ghost appeared in a dream, whose blood stained the decks of the Voyager… Then, this person was infected with the virus and said, thank God, they did not need to prolong their final breath under the torture of their conscience.

Was this the person who ordered the forcefully brought away the Wilkins laboratory, directly causing the deaths of the 400 million surviving people on Earth? Hence it was why they felt so regretful, and thought they were a guilty person.

However, he had heard that the leaders of the spaceship at the beginning were the Marshal and Madam Chen, and such orders should have been imposed by them—while the person who wrote the diary was dead, as they said goodbye at the end of the poetry collection.

Taking a thousand steps back, if that person was another unknown leader of the spaceship at that time, how could their handwriting appear in Zheng Shu’s book collection?

Ling Yi felt that there was a problem, and it was a very important one. He wanted to read that book again.

He waited until the woman’s break ended and she left the room to continue work, then Ling Yi called out, “Vivian, are you here?”

Vivian, wearing a crimson dress, appeared in front of him smilingly, asking, “What’s up?”

“I want to search for something.” Ling Yi pondered, then said, “can you read Lucia’s surveillance footage?”

“Vivian can read it, but Ling Yi does not have the authority to.” Vivian was holding a stuffed doll; she pulled on it indecisively a few times, then blinked at Ling Yi. “But Ling Yi is Vivian’s good friend, so I won’t tell anyone else you’ve seen it.”

Ling Yi: “…”

He understood why Vivian could not be used as an official system for the Voyager. She was too similar to a human.

Vivian was running for a good while, then she leaped to his side and asked quietly, “Do you know Lucia’s execution password?”

Regarding passwords related to Lucia, Ling Yi only knew one. It was the one Tang Ning told him about on the day of the crisis situation.

“Hello World.”

“Correct!” Vivian clapped her hands. “Well done!”

“You knew from the start?”

“I saw Tang Ning type it and I memorised it,” Vivian’s expression looked like she wanted him to praise her, “so I’ve come to test you.”

That was why, although Vivian was indeed very cute, she was truly not suited as a voyage system. Although Lucia also possessed a certain level of intelligence, she would still obey the set rules.

Lucia had a powerful storage area. From there, you could see all the surveillance footage since she took over the ship, and this surveillance area covered nearly the entire ship.

Ling Yi began his search; the object was the camera in Zheng Shu’s office. The time… around the eve of the Voyager’s landing on TKM-IV, at that time he was collaborating with Lin Si to create the Dome liquid.

He could not remember the date of that day, so he chose a relatively early time, fast-forwarded all the way, then finally saw the day he was taken to Zheng Shu’s office by Lin Si.

Then, the two of them were called out by a voice, and he was the only one left in the office. Zheng Shu told him he could read books if he was bored—so he walked to the bookcase, and because the arrangement of the poetry collection was different from the other books, he took it and flipped it open.

He fast-forwarded for a while, until that writing appeared.

Ling Yi zoomed in on the screen, noticing the few lines of words in the white space on the right.

“We’ve finally set sail. I cannot believe what I’ve done. What we’ve all done.”

These words alone made Ling Yi’s eyes suddenly widen.

He pressed the pause button, ran to the other side of the sick ward, reached into the left breast pocket of his military uniform and took out that photo that Zheng Shu had gifted him—the engagement photo of Zheng Shu and Ling Jing. There was a sentence on the back of the photo. He had seen that sentence many times and knew it by heart.

“Before us lies eternity; our souls are love, and a continual farewell.”

However! The important part was not the content!

It was the handwriting—the handwriting of the phrase behind the photo was elegant, tall, and straight, exactly the same as the handwriting in the poetry collection. Furthermore, Ling Yi could recognise Zheng Shu’s handwriting, and knew it absolutely could not have been written by him

Then there could only be one possibility. The owner of the handwriting was the other protagonist of the photo, his older sister Ling Jing.

That was why Zheng Shu kept that book of poems, because it was left behind by his beloved fiancée, just like how he would always place a pot of cat grass on the table—Ling Jing did not know how to serve flowers and plants, only the cat grasses that did not need many requirements could survive a few more days in her hands.

She certainly should have obtained a ship ticket. The Colonel once said that he was from the special forces of the first base in Los Angeles, while Ling Jing was from the second base. They were both colonels—it made no sense that the Colonel had a ship ticket but Ling Jing did not.

So that meant Ling Jing obtained a ticket, as well as boarded the ship. But what did she do? Why was she in so much pain?

The reason for her pain, was it the same reason as the members of the Wilkins Laboratory? But she did not participate in the Berlin virus research.

Ling Yi continued to watch the surveillance footage.

The further on, the more frantic and scribbled the writing became—exuding a frenzied despair. At the very end, she bid farewell to the entire world.

He closed the monitor interface, his heart plagued with many thoughts.

“Room inspection.” Lin Si knocked once on the door symbolically, then walked in.

Feeling guilty, Vivian immediately hid behind a cabinet.

Lin Si raised his eyebrows. “What are you two doing?”

Vivian said, “Not telling you!”

“Uh-huh,” said Lin Si, “why not?”

Vivian rolled her eyes.

“Alright.” Lin Si checked on Ling Yi’s various data and recorded them, saying, “I see you’ve begun to have little secrets.”

Ling Yi contemplated for a moment, concluding that it was better to ask Lin Si about it.

“Have you seen Ling Jing on the ship?” he asked.

“Ling Jing…” Lin Si recalled for a bit. “Ye Selin never said she obtained a ticket. I didn’t meet with her for a long time back on Earth either.”

Ling Yi could not make sense of it at all.

The author has something to say:

Chapters related to big sis’ diary are chapters 13, 14. The Colonel also mentioned Ling Jing in Chapter 37 and talked about military rankings =w=

A novel is a mirror walking along a main road. Stories are the way we make sense of the chaos of existence.

The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.
