Chapter 64 – Fermi Paradox (3)

These days, Lin Si felt that Ling Yi was definitely hiding something from himself. For example, the sneaky actions he did with Vivian before, and his dialogue with Adelaide just now that obviously implied something.

—It was understandable for him to have his own little secrets, but it was a little problematic that he could share it with others, while he himself was completely left in the dark.

He narrowed his eyes, observing the interactions of the two people.

After being glanced at like this, Adelaide could not continue to wink and signal to Ling Yi, and fled from the freezing area like a frightened rabbit.

Lin Si looked in the direction he left, seemingly smiling but was not, then turned to look at Ling Yi.

Ling Yi flattered him. “Are you tired? Do you need me to massage your shoulders?”

Lin Si silently watched his performance. “Sure.”

His massage without any skill was like kneading dough, causing one to feel drowsy. After kneading for a while, Lin Si raised an eyebrow at him. “Don’t you think your strength is a little weak?”

“Is it?” Ling Yi tried to press a little harder, then retracted his hand like he had been shocked by electricity. “You’ll be hurt.”

“It doesn’t hurt.”

“No…” Ling Yi tried again. “It really will hurt, I can’t do it.”

—He was afraid that the mysterious instinct still had not disappeared.

Lin Si said, “Hit me.”

Ling Yi could not perform this action at all. Whenever he forced himself to do it, there was always a stronger command that obstructed his body. He strained himself for a long time, but he still ended up standing still on the spot.

It was like an instinct engraved in his genes, where he could not demonstrate any sort of aggressive action in front of Lin Si. He had been like that from a very young age, always needing to control his strength when fighting against others, but when playing around with Lin Si, he was easily held down even when he battered with all his might..

He gave up, sat down behind Lin Si, and continued to massage his shoulders.

Lin Si felt the pair of paws pressing on his shoulders, and thought they resembled furry cat paws very much. Although there were sharp claw hooks hidden beneath, they never unsheathed. There were only pink paw pads that earnestly tread and trampled all over him.

—He was actually trampled until he felt sleepy.

Ling Yi noticed that Lin Si had fallen asleep.

He carefully stopped his movements. After confirming that Lin Si was really asleep, he squinted his eyes contentedly, carefully hugging him from behind so he could sleep more comfortably, and even had the urge to spray Lin Si a few more times with a sleeping spray.

He knew Lin Si had been overloaded with work these days, that even sleeping four or five hours a night was not easy, but normal people needed far more sleep than that.

Ling Yi slowly adjusted his position, until Lin Si’s entire weight pressed on his body.

Then he looked down at Lin Si in his arms. The mechanical buzzing gradually stopped, time ceased its footsteps, and all the sounds in this world suddenly left far, far away. Silence descended quietly, like a butterfly landing on the window lattice.

In the silver-white freezing area, ice coffins surrounded him in all four directions. The ceiling was high and far away, as if it was the sky. Not far from him were the alien creatures frozen in the ice—strange and terrifying, displaying ostentatiousness in an unrestrained way.42

This coldness, silence, and bizarreness all combined to form an existence beyond reality. This kind of existence was detached from the mortal world, its dimension perpendicular to time.

Only heartbeats remained. In this instant, he held Lin Si’s hand and felt a resonance with the entire universe. In this dimension perpendicular to time, he gained immortality, and saw eternity.

Adelaide said he hoped for young men to immediately confess their feelings to their beloved ones.

But he did not wish to, and felt that it was not necessary.

In this instant, this instant as Lin Si slept, he quietly told him in his heart—

I love you very much. Not the love between spouses, not the love between family, nor the love between friends. It’s the sum of all types of love that exist in this world. You’re not the person who occupies my heart, you’re a part of my living being.

As a person will never be able to strangle themselves to death with their two hands, I will never do anything that will hurt you—that’s the mysterious instinct engraved in my body. 43

Lin Si slowly opened his eyes.

Ling Yi did not move from his position of hugging Lin Si.

“I had a dream,” said Lin Si mildly.

“What did you dream about?”

Lin Si looked at Ling Yi, seeing his beautiful curved lips and pretty black eyes.

“Springtime.”

The scene in the dream was still of Earth—of those barren ruins.

The sky was a dim yellow, covered with a dense, dark haze. The air was full of death, and from an unknown piece of wreckage, a suppressed cry was sent over. As he walked into the distance, grass appeared in the cracks in the masonry under his feet. Following the direction of the green grass, he walked into the sun. There, the grasses and bushes were dense, the air was warm and bright, and the plains on all four sides of him seemed to spread with boundless, endless life, like it was some sort of omen that appeared out of thin air

When he woke up, he realised that the warmth in the dream came from the temperature of Ling Yi’s body, while the lush life was derived from the steady and powerful heartbeat that he was pillowed on.

He looked at the time. Not much time had passed, yet the dream felt very long.

Beauties always made one distracted from work, but there was nothing wrong with a slight delay occasionally. That warm and bright touch made him want to go back to sleep, but work in the real world needed to be continued.

Ling Yi accompanied him out of the freezing area. The moment they returned to the mortal world, the silver metal door slammed shut behind them, and time began to flow once more.

There was no sign of Adelaide in the empty, echoing corridor.

“He left so quickly?” said Ling Yi.

“Adelaide is a brilliant psychiatrist, but he’s not good at lying,” said Lin Si, his words seemingly containing hidden connotations. “If he doesn’t leave now, he’ll expose more than he should.”

Ling Yi’s pupils shrank abruptly like a cat.

Adelaide only studied living people, so he had no interest in this cold, icy spaceship, and would only flock from one familiar place to another. As such, he was currently in the master control room, listening to Tang Ning and Zheng Shu arguing with great interest.

Although the contents of this argument incorporated many complicated technical jargon, it did not prevent him from understanding the topic of the quarrel.

“We’ve already developed a more perfect system, it’s completely fine for us to give up on Lucia now. Why do you not want us to do that?” asked Tang Ning.

“Simply adding a command to Lucia can solve all our problems. Why do we need to enable Vivian?”

“But we can’t find where Lucia’s error originated from. What do we do when another problem occurs?”

“Establish an external program that can make a second judgement on Lucia’s operating status and commands. That will ensure us absolute safety. On the other hand, Vivian has never been formally put into use, so her risk factor is higher.”

The ensuing conversation was filled again with a dizzying array of technical jargon. Adelaide felt like he was about to suffocate.

“Your reasons aren’t convincing enough,” Tang Ning finally said, “I’ll continue to investigate Lucia’s errors, but I still recommend putting Vivian to use.”

“Can’t you spare me some trouble?” Zheng Shu pressed the spot between his eyebrows; his voice had a slight tiredness to it. “Submitting the Vivian programme, multi-phase debugging, graded evaluation—it’s another two to three years of work.”

Before that, all the logical and substantiated rebuttals did not make Tang Ning compromise, but that sentence alone created such a different effect.

“Sorry.” Tang Ning took a deep breath. “I’ll try to write an external program. You rest well.”

A novel is a mirror walking along a main road. Stories are the way we make sense of the chaos of existence.

The only way to survive eternity is to be able to appreciate each moment.
