Chapter 73 – An Unspeakable Matter (4)

Madam Chen died.

It was a homicide.

One stone stirred up a thousand waves, then the news was tightly suppressed by the Marshal.

Investigation.

However, like all the bizarre incidents in the past, there were no clues at all. The surveillance system was suspected to be attacked by a virus, malfunctioning, so only a blank screen could be retrieved.

Madam’s wound was very frightening. According to computer reconstruction and simulation, she was quickly pierced through the heart by an irregular sharp weapon from behind, killing her with one blow, which ruled out the possibility of suicide.

ā€œThere are two possible causes of death, silence and threat,ā€ Lin Si said. ā€œIf Madam Chen learned the truth, the culprit would definitely kill her before she tells it. The second possibility is that the large-scale freezing obstructed their interests, so they’re giving us a warning.ā€ 67

Ling Yi nodded, then added, ā€œShe could’ve clearly named the murderer, but she didn’t and made that gesture instead. I think it must have a deeper meaning.ā€

ā€œRightā€¦ā€ Lin Si organised his thoughts. ā€œShe was hinting at something.ā€

He paused briefly, then said, ā€œLet’s first assume that Madam Chen knew who was the culprit of the series of incidents on the spaceship, and she was silenced. When you asked her who the murderer was, if she said it, then you would also knowā€”ā€

Ling Yi caught Lin Si’s train of thought, ā€œThen I’ll be silenced too! That’s why she didn’t say anything—could it mean that the murderer didn’t leave at that time, and she knew?ā€

ā€œThis is the most logical explanation,ā€ Lin Si knocked on the table with his knuckles a few times, thoughtful, ā€œthis shows one thing. Madam thinks that if the murderer attacks you, you’ll also be killed immediately, so she chose to keep silent about the truth to avoid unnecessary sacrifices.ā€

ā€œI feel like if someone really attacks me, I don’t need to be afraid,ā€ said Ling Yi.

Lin Si shook his head. ā€œThere are many ways to kill people. Even if your body is special, you can’t guarantee absolute safety. Of course… Madam might also be clueless about your strength.ā€

Having said that, he frowned again. ā€œThere’s another question. If she chose not to speak, then she could’ve just kept silent. Why did she make a silencing gesture at you? This gesture must be hinting at something else. ā€œ

Lin Si’s astuteness was always astonishing. This was certainly a question worth considering.

Indeed, if she could not tell the truth, why bother with meaningless actions? That gesture definitely had other connotations.

Lin Si repeated that gesture several times.

ā€œThis gesture has only one meaning no matter the context—telling the other party not to speak.ā€ He lowered his eyes and said. ā€œWho was she warning to not speak?ā€

Ling Yi did not know.

That gesture might not be directed towards himself, but more likely towards another person through himself, because he really had nothing much he could say.

Lin Si’s eyes were calm. He said, ā€œColonel and the others are already receiving the first stages of treatment… When they recover, they will immediately wear Skeletons and patrol the entire spaceship. All physical attacks are ineffective against Skeletons, then everyone’s safety can be guaranteed. Unless ā€˜limitless’ collectively revolts.ā€

ā€œI’ll go to Area 6 to watch them,ā€ said Ling Yi.

Lin Si nodded. ā€œI was thinking of doing that too. Apart from this, I also have to apply to Area 3 for some protection measures.ā€

They needed to guarantee a smooth recovery for the two hundred people of ā€œlimitlessā€.

After coming to an agreement, they sent a message to the marshal.

The Marshal swiftly approved the application, abandoning his old prejudices against genetically modified people. After all, underneath the shadows of the strange ā€œghostā€, only the absolute power of Skeletons could make one feel safe.

Ling Yi pondered and said, ā€œI also want to ensure your personal safety…If you accidentally guess the truth one day, you’ll be in trouble too.ā€

So actually, being too astute was also a problem.

Lin Si suddenly froze.

Could not guess the truth.

In other words, you could not show that you guessed the truth.

—Was that what Madam intended to convey with her gesture?

What was the truth? And how powerful was the ghost, to the point where it could not even be spoken?

A vague feeling of unease surged in his heart.

Since the truth could not be spoken, speculation should also be stopped—at least on the surface. It was best not to express unease as well.

However, Lin Si immediately noticed this and properly tidied his good facial expressions, saying to Ling Yi, ā€œOkay.ā€

Ling Yi blinked playfully.

Lin Si was certain that Ling Yi noticed his abnormal expression just now. He had always been able to detect the subtle changes in himself, so he should have also connected the dots.

After obtaining permission from the Marshal, Ling Yi stayed in Area 6 the whole time.

Mr Colonel had already woken up. Apart from extreme weakness in his body, he was recovering well in other aspects. After learning that Ling Yi escaped cryogenic freezing and secretly stayed conscious alone for three years on the Expeditioner, he looked very conflicted.

Ling Yi suffered unimaginable pain for this—this was something no elder was willing to see. However, thanks to his decision, the Voyagers were able to escape disaster, and the vaccine research also received assistance.

Hence, the Colonel could only wave his hand feebly and continue to receive treatment.

Lin Si checked the Colonel’s physical condition, made a ā€œtskā€ noise and said, ā€œMr Colonel—to be honest, you should’ve died long ago.ā€

The Colonel nearly passed out in anger. ā€œHow are you still so bad at speaking?ā€

ā€œThis is the objective situation.ā€

The Colonel rolled his eyes weakly.

Ling Yi smiled on the side.

The Colonel rolled his eyes again.

Lin Si did not tease him further and began to check on the work processes.

He needed to ensure that no errors would occur in any sequence.

He did not go anywhere else, remaining in Area 6 the whole time. Ling Yi never took a single step out either.

Everything went on as usual. Half a month later, the patients’ physical conditions gradually improved. Mr Colonel could not stand the loneliness, so he got out of bed to move around—and was unfortunately discovered by Lin Si. Now, he was handcuffed to the bed, his freedom completely stripped away. Others saw what happened to the Colonel and acted much more well-behaved, especially when Lin Si’s eyes swept over, they all became like a quiet plant.

When an uneventful day was coming to an end, Zheng Shu visited.

Lin Si immediately frowned after one glance at him. ā€œAre you okay?ā€

—Zheng Shu looked terrible. Much more haggard than before, and his eyes were bloodshot.

ā€œI’ve been too busy recently.ā€ He pressed the spot between his eyebrows. ā€œThere were many things to hand over, so I haven’t slept much.ā€

ā€œI don’t think you should go to sleep,ā€ Lin Si said helplessly. ā€œArea 5 can’t do without you, and Tang Ning can only do programming-related work.ā€

ā€œChimera has been wrapped up, so strictly speaking, I don’t have anything I need to do. The only thing left in Area 5 is maintaining Lucia, which can be handled by Tang Ning and his subordinates.ā€ Zheng Shu sat down and continued. ā€œI’ve been feeling a little tired the past few years… Something big happened recently on the spacecraft and I couldn’t help, so I’m choosing to escape for a bit.ā€

When he said the word ā€œescapeā€, his pronunciation was accentuated and his tone became unnatural for a moment. Lin Si’s understanding of Zheng Shu made him immediately notice this oddity.

Ling Yi poured Zheng Shu a cup of hot water and sat down beside Lin Si.

He looked at Zheng Shu’s eyes.

A very complicated gaze—he could see pain in them.

ā€œYou’re in such a bad state right now. Taking a break is also good,ā€ said Lin Si.

Zheng Shu nodded. He leaned against the back of the chair, revealing a trace of exhaustion. ā€œMy mental state hasn’t been that great either. I often dream about Earth, and the people who diedā€¦ā€

ā€œIt all happened in the past,ā€ Lin Si said calmly, lowering his eyes. ā€œMy deepest condolences.ā€

ā€œBefore, I often comforted myself by saying that they would exist around us in another form, another dimension, in a different form of existence from humansā€¦ā€ Zheng Shu said, smiling.

Lin Si pursed his lips. That unusual tone appeared again—he could not help but focus on it.

But he still carried on the conversation as usual. ā€œI also think about Ye Selin a lot.ā€

ā€œLet’s not talk about this anymore,ā€ Zheng Shu said. ā€œI’m going to be frozen now, so this time I’m here to say goodbye. Such a huge incident happened on the ship, and yet in the end only a bunch of garbled characters were found. You need to stay safe too.ā€

ā€œI’m good. Ling Yi’s been with me this whole time.ā€

ā€œThen I can rest assured.ā€ After Zheng Shu said this, he looked around the laboratory, frowning. ā€œAll the other places all have ultrasonic tubes and infrared rays, while your security facilities are still behind. You should’ve considered upgrading them a long time ago. How can one camera be enough?ā€

ā€œHmā€¦ā€ Lin Si pondered. ā€œIt’s probably an issue of your Area 5. When the Voyagers did a large-scale update on its security facilities, Area 6 was still struggling in the black hole. After returning, you just overhauled it instead of following up, so we could only keep falling behind.ā€

ā€œIt’s indeed our fault.ā€ Zheng Shu smiled, then looked at Ling Yi. ā€œProtect your doctor well.ā€

Ling Yi nodded. ā€œI will.ā€

ā€œI’m leaving now. Take care.ā€ Zheng Shu reached out and gave Lin Si’s shoulder a pat.

Originally, this was the most ordinary of gestures, but after Zheng Shu let go of Lin Si’s shoulder, he did not let his hand fall back to his side.

He retracted his elbow, but his left hand raised its index finger and slowly, slowly, pressed it to his lips.

Afterwards, the hand fell, as if nothing had happened.

Something exploded in Lin Si’s mind—in an instant, the vague unease from before suddenly became real!

He felt cold all over, then looked up imperceptibly at the camera behind Zheng Shu that was directly facing him, and nodded slowly. ā€œI know.ā€

All actions were natural and normal. It was a farewell between friends.

Zheng Shu let out a laugh as if he had just unloaded a heavy burden, but under that ease, there was infinite disorientation and complex emotions.

He got up and left.

Lin Si’s stiffness was hard to detect on the outside, but Ling Yi noticed it.

He looked at Lin Si questioningly.

Lin Si only said, ā€œLet’s go see the patients.ā€

Ling Yi nodded.

At night.

At their usual bedtime, Lin Si turned off the lights.

He gently kissed Ling Yi’s lips and pressed him onto the bed. His voice was hoarse, with a hint of temptation within the usual indifference. ā€œComeā€¦ā€

Ling Yi’s intuition told him something was wrong.

He had work tomorrow, and it was highly intensive work too. Lin Si typically would not actively play with fire and burn himself to death—after all, Ling Yi’s body had been modified.

So he kept calm and just followed along, gently returning the kiss.

Lin Si’s hand slid to his waist, then upwards, into his clothes.

In the darkness, separated by a layer of clothing, in a place where nothing and no one could see, Lin Si’s fingertip wrote a few letters on Ling Yi’s skin.

The message conveyed by the combination of letters was immensely terrifying; each stroke was like a heavy blow, prompting Ling Yi’s eyes to widen.

Lucia…revolted!
