Chapter 76 – The Past Should Be Buried (1)

In peace and quiet, the three month long voyage passed in a flash.

Ling Yi’s passion for plants was enduring.

These days, his succulents had separated into over a dozen pots. They were arranged in a messy but charming placement, occupying the entire windowsill.

And that rose, after experiencing a few minor scares,71 was now very healthy, with a plump, crimson bud sprouting from it.

After maintaining the plants, he climbed onto his bed and to the window.

—This was a hobby he recently developed. When he had nothing to do at night, he would put on the pair of glasses Lin Si gave him a few years ago and gaze outside the window.

When travelling through the subspace, outside the window was absolute darkness. But once he put on those glasses, everything changed.

Outside the window were countless, chaotic colours. All known and unknown hues were splashed together in an indescribable manner; chaotic yet orderly, ugly yet beautiful. At the same time, it was boundlessly far, as if you could see billions of light-years away in one glance, or as if it was simply just a blank canvas in front of him, all that could be seen utterly unimaginable. After taking off his glasses, he had no way of recounting what he saw, for that image had already transcended the senses of humans.

Of course, he could not watch for too long. After a short span of two minutes, he could not bear the dizziness it gave him and cut his viewing session short. In a daze, he threw himself on Lin Si, his pupils relaxing and his entire body turning soft.

Lin Si patted the little sick cat on the back and helped him settle down.

The sick cat hugged Lin Si’s waist from behind and rested his chin on his shoulder.

He saw that Lin Si was still looking at Su Ting’s document.

These days, he adjusted and added many things to the timeline. Every programme, every accident, everything was arranged on it regardless of significance.

There were still many doubts about this matter. For example, Lucia’s mutation occurred before the black hole accident, but the symptoms of the entire incident had already manifested before that.

Therefore, even if the dust had settled in most people’s minds, he knew that, at least from the perspectives of the Marshal and Lin Si, it was not over yet.

“Still not sleeping?” Lin Si closed the page and asked him.

Ling Yi wrapped his arms around him drowsily, “I feel uncomfortable…”

—Not only did he insist on looking at something beyond this dimension, looking once is not enough for him, he had to attempt it every day. Therefore, it could be said that the saying “curiosity killed the cat” was an unshakeable truth.

Lin Si laid him flat, let him pillow on his lap, ran his fingers through his beautiful black hair and gave him a head massage.

“I don’t think four-dimensional creatures should try to see what’s going on in the five-dimensional world, classmate Ling Yi.”

Ling Yi snorted. “Then why is Area 1 still studying the higher-dimensional world?”

“That’s why they didn’t yield any results,” replied Lin Si.

Ling Yi continued to whine and grumble. “But it’s so dark and ugly outside…”

“Then that’s perfect for protecting your eyes.” Lin Si ignored his quibbles and stuffed him into the blanket. “Sleep early. Tomorrow’s award ceremony will take a long time.”

Ling Yi could only go to sleep aggrievedly.

His hand grabbed the corner of Lin Si’s shirt, refusing to let go. He had done the same when he was still a child.

When Ling Yi fell asleep, Lin Si opened the other two documents.

One was a report of the Chimera project and the experimental materials applied, while the other was evidence found by Su Ting that Ling Jing had appeared on the spaceship.

He turned off the light only after he had read every word. The room was plunged into complete darkness.

Ling Yi’s body leaned towards him. His steady, even breaths made one feel tranquillity and pleasantness.

Sometimes, darkness existed to protect. For instance, during the warp voyage, outside the window would be absolute darkness. If it took off its black robe and revealed its original face, everyone would break down once they saw the vast and boundless five-dimensional world.

The truth of the human world was also the same. If the truth revealed in the end was too heavy, he was willing to bury it in order to keep Ling Yi’s soul far from the shadows.

The award ceremony was held in the first auditorium of Area 3. Everyone on the spaceship received an invitation letter.

This was a huge venue that could accommodate thousands of people. Overall, it was in a formal dark colour, the walls and ceilings over ten metres high were fully adorned with the national flags of the countries on Earth. Occupying the most noticeable place in the centre was the Voyager’s own flag.

Its background colour was a dark blue that symbolised the endless sea of stars; nine six-pointed stars formed a circle, surrounding the white sail in the centre. The nine stars represented the nine areas of the Voyager, while the sail symbolised this grand voyage.

This voyage was just like the expectations this flag carried, bearing the fire inherited from Prometheus with their sails raised up high, sailing forwards amidst the perilous waves of the vast ocean. As such, when everyone saw this flag, infinite pride surged in their hearts.

They loved the Voyager passionately.

The award ceremony was formal and grand.

What the Expeditioners achieved—the exploration and extraction of dozens of resource-rich planets, abundant records of cosmic data available for scientific research, and most importantly, the news of the purple planet alone was already enough to allow “limitless”, which had been frozen away for ten years by Area 3, to wear their glory and pride on their sleeves.

At the same time, this was also a signal, a political signal—from here on, “limitless” would officially become the elite force of Area 3, appearing in the public gaze.

The people in the research areas had in-depth knowledge of the project, but most people in Area 3 only knew its name.

Mr Silas, for instance, was now in a state of dumbfoundedness.

Military staff officers such as the cabinet were not very concerned about their skills and strength, hence Mr Silas was concerned about another point—the boss of “limitless”, the Mr Colonel from Los Angeles base one, was awarded the rank of brigadier general! The leader had such a high rank, which meant that even though there are only 200 people in the entire “limitless”, it could form a faction of its own. The long-standing status quo of Area 3 was about to usher in a new round of changes.

The beautiful boy who occupied the same office as himself, who everyone thought had joined the cabinet because he was backed by the Marshal and Madam Chen, was actually a member of the legendary “limitless”!

No, not only that, he was also a core member of “limitless”, their weapon of mass destruction. The host was currently reciting his numerous deeds of merit one by one—going deep into dangers to collect valuable experimental data were only second to the fact that he endured three years alone after being infected with the purple virus, and in the end, established Lucia’s conspiracy to destroy everyone, and lastly made outstanding contributions to the virus research…it was truly unbelievable.

Mr Silas was shocked. From the bottom of his heart, he felt ashamed of his various speculations from before.

That was not all—when the Marshal pinned two Medals of Glory on him and awarded him the rank of major, not only was the crowd on Area 3’s side enthusiastic, but even the areas of the scientists emitted a thunderous applause. When he glanced over, many of the madams unexpectedly had red eyes as well.

Of course, Silas had no idea that Ling Yi was essentially raised by the madams. He only knew that this young man was not only a rising star of Area 3, yet also had a good relationship with the scientific research areas, and moreover, his future ahead was limitless.

After it ended, Ling Yi returned to Lin Si’s side with excitement in his eyes.

He asked, “Did you watch me?”

Lin Si said, “I’ve always been watching.”

Ling Yi smiled widely, his eyes curved up, then took off the two badges on his chest. “For you!”

He placed the two stars in Lin Si’s palm and closed his fingers into a fist.

A young soldier returned from the battlefield, gazing at his lover.

He didn’t seem to have strong feelings about his badges when he handed them to Lin Si.

But when a person placed his merits and honour into the hands of another, it meant with certainty that he loved him with all his life.

Lin Si held the two stars, as if he had touched Ling Yi’s young soul, soft and scorching.

This unique, robust strength often touched his heart like this, causing the weary, wilted leaves of a tree to gradually fall to the ground and sprout with new life.

“Thank you,” he said earnestly.

After the award ceremony, there was a grand reception. Lin Si posted a message on Voyager’s homepage recruiting volunteers for phase three of “limitless”.

Military officers who were very interested in “limitless” after the award ceremony immediately noticed the announcement, and Lin Si received many applications almost instantly.

Recruiting volunteers instead of applying for experimental subjects—this is the final result of his negotiation with the Marshal.

However, the Marshal did not expect him to seize this delicate time to recruit, so he became so angry that his face turned black.

Interest in “limitless” was once again sparked among people in the scientific research areas, especially Mr Lambert from Area 1. He expressed great interest in this project, and on the grounds of studying the compatibility of antimatter weapons and Skeletons, he immediately took up a post in Area 6.

In the blink of an eye, another few days passed, and the subspace journey was drawing to a close.

“We’ll be landing soon, does Area 6 have any guesses about those purple creatures?” Mr Lambert chatted with Lin Si.

Sorting the experimental data, Lin Si said, “The specimen drawings of the two strange creatures show indistinct life structures. The rest can only be determined by on-site investigation.”

“Uh-huh,” said Mr Lambert, shrugging. “I’m jealous of you people in Area 6 who always have new things to do.”

“You have nothing to do these days?”

“Of course, otherwise I wouldn’t be here to muck around,” said Mr Lambert. “I don’t do theoretical research, and the antimatter weapon is finished. Originally I could still tamper with the universe simulator, but Madam Chen already finished the algorithm a while ago, and even the universe simulator doesn’t need manual observation, so my laboratory is now just dead silent.”

“You should still find something to do,” said Lin Si mildly.

Suddenly, in an instant, a flash of lightning blasted in his mind!

What in the world did Madam Chen discover?

How did she know of Lucia’s revolt?

That screen, the screen she was looking at before she died, the hint she left behind… it was that screen itself!

The terminal of the universe simulator was in Madam’s hands.

And what it had been simulating all this time, was none other than the flight path of the spaceship!

Mr. Lambert was rambling incessantly when he suddenly heard Lin Si say, “Vivian.”

There was a tremble in his voice that was suppressed with extreme effort, completely different from Lin Si’s usual tone.

Vivian appeared in response. She was still wearing the red Baroque princess dress, but it was adorned with a slender sabre at her waist.

Without waiting for her question, Lin Si said, “Stop the voyage. Turn back…immediately!”

Vivian was taken aback by the sternness in his tone. “Okay…”

However, before she even finished speaking, she suddenly reeled!

“I…” Her face suddenly paled and she gripped her head tightly. “It hurts…!”

As if something was strangling her neck, her small body fell to the ground and curled up tightly. She cried out in agony, “It hurts…”

It was too late.

The stack of experimental data slid down from Lin Si’s hand, scattering on the ground like snowflakes.

The entire spaceship suddenly shook violently!

The defence system and weapons system were fully activated, all rooms and corridors were closed, and the muzzles of the thermal weapons turned to directly face the crowd!

All the display screens turned blank with a “pop”, then, the image of the blonde female knight with white armour gradually appeared.

Her face was calm and her voice was steady, still the one they were all familiar with.

“Hello, welcome aboard the Voyager.”

“It is currently 2497 A.D. You have left Earth for 253 years.”

“This voyage will end in three minutes. Destination: Milky Way—Orion Arm—Solar System Third Ring—TE-III Dynamic Wormhole.”

“Welcome home.”
