Chapter 10

There’s no way Zhan Yin hadn’t done that on purpose with her reaction. Xian Sheng looked down and coughed lowly, comforting, “There must’ve been an issue with the carriage. Princess, there’s no need to blame yourself.”

Zhan Lue felt worse when he saw Xian Sheng letting this go.

The man held in his anger and glanced at his younger sister, bending down to pick up the hair accessory on the ground. He personally placed it back in Xian Sheng’s hair before helping him indoors. The group of princes and princesses hurriedly followed behind.

The Jin Emperor had a total of fifteen children. Although Zhan Lue was the eldest, he was the fifth amongst the princes. However, the Crown Prince’s position was different from the princes.

At the banquet set at Xile Pavilion, besides the five that were still babies and just learned how to walk, as well as the two that died on the battlefield, eight of them came. Amongst them, three of the princesses and a prince were already married; they each brought their family members over. Clearly, that made up quite a few people.

Xian Sheng greeted each person, and they exchanged gifts.

After Zhan Yin’s fuss, Xile Pavilion was very quiet now, only hearing Xian Sheng’s frequent coughs. Countless gazes landed on him, some worry, some curious, and others faintly guilty.

He finally sat down by the table, but Xian Sheng wasn’t in the appetite to eat at all. It was expected for an arrogant princess to cause him trouble. He just didn’t expect her to pick faults with him in public. He didn’t even have a chance to react.

“Drink some soup.” Zhan Lue said, “I’ll have her come to the residence to apologize to you later.”

Xian Sheng received the soup and replied, “It’s fine. I’m okay.”

Well, he couldn’t really say that. After all, his left shoulder was faintly hurting from bumping into the carriage.

Zhan Zhen frowns and takes another look at Zhan Yin. The latter looks restlessly at Xian Sheng. When her brother looks at her, she becomes more nervous.

Body side, Zhan Jin pulled her: “You also eat something, don’t look.”

“I…I got my elder brother angry.” Zhan Yin said in a low voice, “I don’t know whether my sister-in-law got hurt or not. A-Jin…what should I do?”

“Didn’t you want to teach her a lesson?”

“Um…” Zhan Yin said in a low voice, “How would I know that she was that pretty?…When she looked at me, my mind went blank. Even more, my heart is beating nonstop. If I was a man, I would definitely be moved by her looks.”

“Wake up. That’s royal brother’s woman.”

“What do you think I should do now? She definitely won’t like me anymore.”

“You’re not the one living with her, so why does it matter if she likes you or not?” Zhan Jin couldn’t help but look towards Xian Sheng. Seeing Zhan Yin about to cry, she responded, “Elder brother will definitely make you pay her a visit and apologize. Just act according to the circumstances.”

Zhan Yin hurriedly nodded and placed some food in her bowl, saying, “Good A-Jin. You’re really my lifesaver.”

Zhan Jin felt helpless. She saw Qing Rong from the corner of her eyes. The girl was looking at Zhan Lue. After noticing her gaze, she immediately turned around and faintly smiled, lifting her glass of wine in respect.

Zhan Jin also returned a smile.

The quiet gaze filled Zhan Yin’s mind. She couldn’t tell whether Xian Sheng was blaming her or not when she glanced at her. But when the banquet was over, she ran over to Xian Sheng; the latter didn’t even give her a proper look.

Zhan Lue had people prepare a carriage and carried Xian Sheng in. They walked out of the palace door before Zhan Lue abandoned his horse and got in the carriage as well. Sitting by the side, he asked, “Are you hurt anywhere?”

“No.” Xian Sheng replied, “I’m good.”

Zhan Lue’s gaze landed on his left shoulder. “Let me look.”

“I’m really fine.” Xian Sheng was worried that he might come grab him again, so he ducked to the side. “Your Highness, there’s no need to be overly worried… don’t you have to go to the military camp later on?”

Zhan Lue said in a deep voice, “I’m resting. I’m not going anywhere.”

“…” It’s not like Xian Sheng could say anything else.

Zhan Lue seemed to be holding in his emotions. His fingers clenched together before he released them again. He suddenly grabbed Xian Sheng and the latter was unexpectedly placed on his legs. He hurriedly pushed him. “Your Highness…we’re in the carriage.”

“What do you think I’m going to do?”

“…” How am I supposed to know what you’re going to do?!

Xian Sheng felt his scalp going numb. He scrunched his face into a bun. Zhan Lue gradually lifted his hands and suddenly grabbed Xian Sheng’s left shoulder, slightly pinching it. Xian Sheng became teary-eyed right then.

“Didn’t you say you’re fine?”

While saying that, he unbuttoned the buttons on his shirt. Xian Sheng immediately clutched it tightly, raising his voice, “I’m fine! Don’t look…when I get back later, I’ll have Ruyi treat it.”

By raising his voice, he couldn’t help but let out a cough. He glanced at Zhan Lue in fear. Seeing his dark gaze, he couldn’t help but feel more terrified.

Zhan Yin was really Zhan Lue’s real sister. She casually gave him an excuse to look at Xian Sheng’s body. He was weak, so he normally wore thick clothes. It wasn’t obvious, but once he removed his clothes, it would definitely become obvious at a glance.

“Why are you anxious?” Zhan Lue faintly said, “We’re in the carriage right now. I won’t do anything to you.”

“…I’m just afraid of the cold.” Xian Sheng explained, “There’s no ointment in the carriage, so what’s the point even if you look at it?”

Zhan Lue softened his voice, “Then let me take a look once we’re back at the residence.”

Xian Sheng shifted his gaze and found another topic. “This morning…the white cloth…”

“I just put a drop of blood on it.” He looked at Xian Sheng’s face and said, “…and what I should’ve given to the princess.”

What could be his that was placed on the white cloth…? Xian Sheng was confused momentarily before realizing what he was referring to. His face flushed. The painting of a shy beauty was displayed in front of Zhan Lue. He couldn’t help but wrap his arms around Xian Sheng’s waist, capturing his lips.

“Mnph.”

The carriage steadily came to a stop. His lips were red and swollen. Zhan Lue pressed his nose against Xian Sheng’s, slightly panting. Xian Sheng did so as well. He pursed his lips and shifted his gaze. “The carriage…seemed to have come to a stop.”

Zhan Lue softened his voice, “Then let me take a look once we’re back at the residence.”

Zhan Lue directly carried Xian Sheng down the carriage. He didn’t let him walk at all.

Returning to the warm bridal room, Xian Sheng was placed on the bed. The man sat by the bed and said, “Can I look at it now? If it’s serious, I’m going to have to summon a royal physician.”

Xian Sheng touched his left shoulder and responded, “It shouldn’t be too serious. You caught me…hm, just let Ruyi come and help me.”

“Is princess dissatisfied with me or something?”

I’m very dissatisfied with you.

Xian Sheng pursed his red and swollen lips again, feeling his lips swelling up. He felt very uncomfortable. “Your Highness is handsome and noble. It’s my fortune to be able to marry Your Highness. Why would I be dissatisfied?”

He smiled at Zhan Lue and the latter also smiled. Xian Sheng just relaxed when he said Zhan Lue’s stern gaze. He suddenly pounced over, making Xian Sheng gasp in fear. He widened his eyes.

The man said, “You’re lying.”

“…” Why expose my lie?

Xian Sheng curled his body into a ball. He was always very afraid of Zhan Lue’s behavior. He gave him a feeling as though he was going to swallow him whole. Even more, he believed that it wasn’t his illusion.

He noticed that he wasn’t Zhan Lue’s match at all.

Zhan Lue suddenly bit on Xian Sheng’s lips again. Xian Sheng was forced to part his lips and raise his head. His lips were captured and his lips were licked.

He took a deep breath to keep calm, but Zhan Zhen dangerously leaned up to his ear and breathed softly. Xiansheng suddenly felt numb on his scalp, stiff all over, goose bumps layer by layer.

He strained his body and listened to Zhan Zhen’s low voice: “Sooner or later, every inch of your body will be like this -”

“…Licking every part of your body.”

Zhan Lue gradually pulled apart and softly laughed, walking off in large strides.

Xian Sheng stayed in his original spot, his heart beating wildly. His chest was faintly in pain. He started coughing again and felt a layer of cold sweat on his back.

The door was suddenly pushed open. Yue Hua walked in with a bowl of medicine. Xian Sheng had already calmed down, now lying weakly by the bed.

Ruyi followed Xian Sheng to the palace today, so she was now complaining to Yue Hua. “She basically wants to hurt our princess! How can the North’s women be so crude and vulgar? Thankfully, His Highness was here and carried the princess out in time. Quickly look….how’s the princess?”

Yue Hua was an expert in medicine. Her gaze landed on his red and swollen lips. She knitted her brows. While removing his clothes, she said worriedly, “Princess, Your Highness…”

Xian Sheng knitted his brows and faintly said, “After all, I need to give him some sweets. Be gentler…it hurts!”

Tears hung by the corner of his eyes.

He only felt comfortable around Yue Hua and Ruyi; they made him feel like he was back at the Liang Palace. He didn’t need to hide his emotions either.

He didn’t hurt his bones, but his arm was bruised all the way to his shoulder. Yue Hua massaged his injury. Xian Sheng couldn’t help but sniffle a bit.

Yue Hua felt bad as she stared at his injury. “In the next few days, I don’t think there are any urgent matters that require you to leave the residence. Princess, you can rest here for a few days…but you’d have to cope with the Crown Prince.”

“I’d rather go out.” To Xian Sheng, Zhan Lue was way scarier than anyone in the North Jin.

He was threatened by his presence and he felt pressured.

His life was in Zhan Lue’s hands.

After he applied the ointment, Xian Sheng felt dispirited and worried. He didn’t even want to move his fingers. Yue Hua helped him wear his clothes before asking, “Is princess going to nap for a bit?”

“Yes.”

Ruyi came over to help him take off the outer garment, helping him lie down. Yue Hua walked out with the items on the tray only to see the Crown Prince leaning by the pillar of the hallway.

“How is she?”

“She finally just went to sleep after a while.”

Zhan Lue walked into the room as Yue Hua hurriedly exclaimed, “Princess is injured. Your Highness, please treat her kindly.”

“Treat her kindly?” Zhan Lue snorted. “She needs to give me an opportunity in the first place.”

Yue Hua was speechless.

She felt awkward. However, Zhan Lue kicked the door in. If it weren’t for his dignified imposing manner, he acted like an annoyed kid that didn’t get his candy.

Xian Sheng was exhausted. But with Zhan Lue here, he didn’t dare to fall asleep. The moment Zhan Lue sat by the bed, Xian Sheng opened his eyes.

“What are you scared of? I’m not going to touch you.”

When he faced Xian Sheng, Zhan Lue’s tone softened. “I just came in to visit you.”

“…I can’t fall asleep with you here.”

“Then does the princess want to assume her responsibility as she should’ve on her wedding night?”

“…” Xian Sheng twisted his body around in the blanket. The blanket was tugged in silently just like that. The two sides of the blanket were pressed underneath him. While silently on alert, he rolled himself into a silkworm as though that would make him feel safer.

Zhan Lue couldn’t help but laugh. “Princess, then you mustn’t sleep. Otherwise…”

He scared him. “I’ll secretly eat you up.”

Xian Sheng exclaimed, “You, you…”

Zhan Lue raised his brows and glanced at Xian Sheng’s miserable look for a while. Then, Xian Sheng suddenly said, “Don’t bully me!”

It was unclear whether Xian Sheng’s words were too miserable or what, but Zhan Lue had restrained himself a bit. He reached over to pull the blankets over Xian Sheng. In a soft voice, he said, “I won’t bully you. Go sleep.”

Xian Sheng was genuinely tired. But in the end, Zhan Lue was still the Crown Prince. He wouldn’t go back on his words. Whilst letting his imagination run wild, he quickly fell into deep slumber in front of Zhan Lue.

He vaguely felt Zhan Lue sitting there for a while. Then, he stood up and placed the bed curtains down. After that, he stared at Xian Sheng sleeping while supporting the bed curtains with one hand. Up until he loosened his grip and the bed curtains fell down did Xian Sheng fall into complete darkness.

Xian Sheng didn’t sleep well tonight. He dreamed that while in deep slumber, Zhan Lue secretly climbed in bed with him. Then, he noticed his identity and slapped him on the face right then. He was jolted awake from his dream, dragged out by Zhan Lue by his hair helplessly. Then, he was forced to kneel in the cold snow.

Zhan Lue even poured gasoline on him, wanting to burn him alive.

The hatred Zhan Lue felt towards him in his dream was too genuine and real. Xian Sheng was startled awake, only to see the man sitting by his side and furrowing his brows.

“Your Highness…” He felt a towel on his forehead. He watched as Zhan Lue took it off of his forehead and exchanged it for a new one from a maid. He seemed to have understood something.

“You have a fever.” Zhan Lue said, “You’ve almost had the fever for a whole day and night. It’s about to be morning.”

Xian Sheng noticed that there seemed to be a new furnace in the room. Zhan Lue only wore thin long sleeves. He seemed to have taken it off because of how warm the room is. But even so, sweat droplets filled his forehead.

“You…didn’t sleep?”

“How can you sleep like this?” Zhan Zhen took a bowl from behind him and said, “Drink this bowl of medicine. It’s a little bitter.”

Xian Sheng’s arms are weak. He holds his waist and sits up. The man holds the bowl and feeds it to his mouth. Subconsciously, Xian Sheng reaches out his hands to hold the bottom of the bowl, wrinkles his face and drinks it all at once. Suddenly, he begins to feel sick and his face turns pale.

He leaned against Zhan Lue, teary-eyed when he was suddenly fed a candied fruit.

Xian Sheng said powerlessly, “Thank you.”

“You’ve been thanking me the entire day.” Zhan Lue wiped Xian Sheng’s mouth and placed him back down before saying, “The medicine will make you drowsy. Sleep some more.”

He had everyone retreat while he lied back down on the bed. Xian Sheng leaned sideways as he stared at Zhan Lue silently for a while. In a very small voice, he asked, “Do you regret this?”

Zhan Lue placed his arms behind his head and glanced at Xian Sheng who was only a few feet away from him. “Regret what?”

“My body is too weak… maybe I can’t even make it through the North’s first winter.”

Zhan Lue replied, “Then the Liang Country won’t make it until next year’s winter either.”

“You…!”

“I never do business at a loss.” Zhan Lue interrupted and shifted his gaze. He said while closing his eyes, “I know what you’re thinking. You want to die, but you also want me to promise you to leave the Liang Country alone. However, listen carefully. If I can’t get what I want, then you definitely won’t get what you want too.”

Xian Sheng glared at him for a while before his eyes became teary. He closed his eyes to rest for a bit.

Zhan Lue’s voice rang again in the empty room. “If you want the Liang Country to stay peaceful, then stay alive.”

Xian Sheng angrily fell asleep.

During his sleep, he dreamed of riding on Zhan Lue and beating him up. He even stitched that annoying mouth shut.

Xian Sheng had been much more angry during this time period than his whole life. When he woke up, Zhan Lue was by his bed again. He leaned over and said observingly, “You seem to be in a better spirit today. Do you feel unwell anywhere else?”

Hearing his words of concern, Xian Sheng suddenly couldn’t be angry at him anymore. He pursed his lips and said, “I’m hungry.”

Zhan Lue reached over and carried him to the table.

There were some food on the table, containing both meat and vegetable dishes. It looked very appealing, but it tasted fresh and light. He could barely taste anything. He reluctantly swallowed a spoon of lotus root porridge after splitting it into several spoons. He wasn’t in the appetite at all.

His face turned pale and he looked sick. Zhan Lue knitted his brows again, saying, “I’ll go order people to make other food. What do you want to eat?”

“It’s okay.” Xian Sheng shook his head. After all, the physicians won’t let him eat other things either.

He was helped back onto the bed by Ruyi. Not long later, someone brought a bowl of sweet and sour pork chops. Zhan Lue had them place it on the table by the bed. He grabbed the bowl and asked, “How about this?”

The strong fragrance assaulted his nostrils. Xian Sheng swallowed his saliva. He eye scouldn’t help but land on the colorful and luring pork chops. “I… Empress Mother said I shouldn’t eat these things. It’s not good for my body.”

“Now that you’re married, you should listen to your husband.” Zhan Lue said, “I allow you to eat this.”

Xian Sheng subconsciously looked at Yue Hua. The latter already knitted his brows, lightly shaking her head.

Xian Sheng looked down when Zhan Lue suddenly peered over. He hollered, “Everyone, leave!”

Yue Hua left as ordered. Zhan Lue looked at Xian Sheng again. “It’s fine if you occasionally have a bite or two.”

He personally fed the pork chops to Xian Sheng’s mouth, coaxing, “Say ah—”

The smell was too alluring. Xian Sheng couldn’t help but open his mouth and take a bite of it. The sweet and sour juice mixed with the slightly burnt pork chops filled his mouth. Xian Sheng’s eyes immediately brightened.

The corner of Zhan Lue’s lips curled up. He asked softly, “Is it a bit sour?”
