Chapter 15

‘Femme fatale’ was now sitting by the pavilion, well-behaved. Because there was wind by the window, he didn’t take off his cloak or his hat.

The moment Zhan Lue left, Xian Sheng felt much more relaxed. Zhan Yin was giggling and talking in his ears. Xian Sheng smiled in response, finishing the melon seeds Zhan Lue peeled for him. Then, he started peeling it himself.

Seeing this, Zhan Yin actively started peeling melon seeds with him, placing it on the plate. She tried to kiss up, “Sister-in-law, eat slowly. I’ll help you peel it.”

How could Xian Sheng accept this treatment? Therefore, he shifted the topic, “Qing Rong isn’t with you today?”

“She’s with my royal grandmother.” Zhan Yin found this strange. “Does sister-in-law want to meet her? I’ll have someone call her over.”

“It’s okay. I just heard that the three of you guys are always together. That’s why I was a bit curious when I didn’t see her.”

Zhan Jin coughed.

Zhan Yin moved back and glanced at Xian Sheng as though saying: don’t I treat you very well? Xian Sheng laughed and said, “His Highness is handsome and noble. It’s normal for him to have admirers.”

Zhan Yin felt bad as she saw him wearing a peaceful expression. Zhan Jin couldn’t help but take a few more looks. She got up and sat next to the place Zhan Lue had sat before. Xian Sheng sat next to Zhan Yin and Zhan Jin. “Is sister-in-law used to living in the capital now?”

Xian Sheng couldn’t help but look at her. He felt something strange towards Zhan Jin. “It’s fine as long as I don’t leave the room. Though, I’m a bit eager for spring to come.”

Zhan Jin said gently, “Spring in the North is also a bit cold. You won’t feel the weather turning warm until at least in April.”

“It’s going to be a long time.” Xian Sheng conceals his sadness and looks at the field ahead. At the moment, the ice man is ready, waiting for the order of the Jin emperor.

“Tomorrow, let’s eat mutton soup and then cook it. Mutton warms our stomach. We sweat every time we eat it.” Zhan Yin also nodded fiercely on the side. Xian Sheng thought this was rare. He glanced at her, but also felt a bit eager. “If His Highness allows me, I’ll go.”

“As long as sister-in-law acts cute, won’t the elder brother just surrender to you?” She gave Xian Sheng a look. She didn’t wear a pampered expression, rather acted quite handsome and straightforward. He looked at Zhan Yin only to see her covering her mouth and secretly laughing.

He suddenly felt something threatening to burst from his heart. It was small details, but because he personally experienced it before, he noticed it at first sight.

He took a few more looks at Zhan Jin, pursing his lips. “You know martial arts?”

“The royal family in the Jin Country all know martial arts.” She picked up the teacup sitting on the stove and poured a cup of warm water for Xian Sheng. “It’s about to begin.”

Applause erupted and Zhan Yin eagerly ran to the window, hollering, “Zhan Hua! Zhan Hua!”

Zhan Hua seemed to be the Sixth Prince. Like Zhan Jin, he also needed to call Zhan Yin elder sister. Xian Sheng sipped tea before following over as well.

The young men on the ice were all agile. Although they were part of the royal family, they didn’t give in to each other. Each one was quick like lightning. There were marks on the ice from their ice skates. The common people cheered around the surrounding, and there were vendors surging in from time to time, trying to sell melon seeds, candied fruits, and other snacks. It was a bustling sight.

Xian Sheng kept his gaze fixated on the rink, excited. He controlled himself and clutched the window frame tightly.

Jiang Qin was still observing on the roof. Zhan Lue suddenly felt something wrong. “What is that?”

He glanced at it for a long time before he seemed to notice some long strips hiding under the ice. Each long strip seemed to be connecting to a certain point. However, the ice was too thick, so one could only see some faint black figures when they were standing high.

At the same time, Xian Sheng also noticed something was wrong. His gaze landed on the ice under the young men’s feet. Almost at the same time as Zhan Lue, he said, “Oh no!”

Jiang Qin had raised his bow and arrow towards the unknown place. Shockingly, he asked, “What’s the matter?”

Zhan Lue had already jumped down.

In the pavilion, Zhan Jin also looked at Xian Sheng. “What did you see?”

“There’s something under the ice.” Xian Sheng’s expression was tense. “It may possibly be explosives.”

Zhan yin was stunned. Xian Sheng already walked out. “I need to immediately go see His Majesty. The long strips under the ice should be empty. If my guess is right, there must be explosives hidden within.”

Zhan Jin followed along quickly, reminding, “There are lots of common people here. You need to take responsibility for your words.”

“I know.” Xian Sheng turned the corner and out the door when he encountered Qing Rong. She carried in a tray of fruits and said, “The empress had me bring it over for the Crown Princess to taste.”

“Many thanks.” He walked out when Qing Rong stopped him again. She asked strangely, “Crown Princess seems to be very nervous. What are you going to do?”

“I am requesting to see His Majesty.”

“Right now?” Qing Rong said, “We’re in the middle of the competition. His Majesty probably doesn’t have time to see you.”

Zhan Jin suddenly called out, “A-Yin.”

Zhan Yin ran out rapidly and took the tray of fruits. She said, “I want to see my empress mother. Get out of my way quickly.”

Qing Rong smiled. “I’m just worried that you guys will ruin His Majesty’s mood. What if you guys get punished?…”

Zhan Yin was unhappy. “Why are you so talkative?…”

Before she finished her words, they suddenly felt a rumbling on the pavilion coupled along with a huge boom. The three inch ice cracked and some pieces flew in the air, harming civilians in the process.

Countless tides erupted as a result. The water splashed everywhere and shrieks were paired along with the cracks. A huge hole on the pavilion had formed as a result of the explosion. Ice pieces pierced over and Zhan Jin immediately blocked it with her body, pushing Zhan Yin and Xian Sheng in the process too.

Xian Sheng couldn’t stand steadily and subconsciously went to reach for the banister by the side. He heard Ruyi’s holler, “Princess!”

His heart raced quickly. He saw people panicking and running around. There were some people yelling, “The Liangs have raided the place!”

A squad of soldiers passed by in front of him and he subconsciously walked towards the stairs when he was suddenly pushed to the side, rolling off from the banister.

His face was pale, thinking that he’d lose his life today. However, a powerful hand caught him by the waist. He looked up to see Zhan Lue.

He let go of Xian Sheng and asked, “Where are A-Yin and A-Jin?”

Xian Sheng looked up and Zhan Lue continued, “I’ll be back. Find a place to hide.”

Xian Sheng fiercely nodded and quickly avoided the chaotic crowd. He turned around to see a group of men in black charging in. Each of them carried a long sword, and maids, and eunuchs died quickly.

While coughing in a low voice, Xian Sheng panted. He swiftly hid behind a huge rock, the scene in front of him turning black.

It was too sudden. The Jin soldiers were flustered. The common people scattered everywhere and some were stepped to death alive.

Xian Sheng used the rock as support and slid to the side. His long hair was scattered over his shoulder. He suddenly felt someone behind him and before he could turn around, someone pinched his neck, and he lost his consciousness.

Zhan Lue went over, but couldn’t find Zhan Yin. However, he saw the unconscious Zhan Jin. He hurriedly carried her down as Jiang Qin rushed over. “His Majesty and the empress are both fine.”

“Take care of her.” Zhan Zhen pushes Zhan Jin into his arms. Jiang Qin is in a hurry: “What are you going to do…”

Zhan Zhen’s eyes looked around for his figure: “Going to find someone alone.”

Xian Sheng was woken up by someone. Someone was shouting: “Let my sister-in-law go! You beast! What have you done to my sister-in-law? ”

He slightly knitted his brows. Someone gently helped him up and said softly, “Did you get woken up by the noises? I’m going to order someone to cut her tongue off.”

Once they finished talking, they ordered someone to do so. Xiang Sheng’s eyelids jumped and he could now see the scene in front of him. “Stop.”

The guard by Qin Yi’s side stopped. Xian Sheng waited a while and heard Zhan Yin still cursing out, thinking that girl really is energetic.

He finally had time to observe the room in front of him. It was very exquisite, and the arrangements were dainty and elegant. The bed was very soft. The incense was probably brought over from the Liang Country. He was familiar with the scent.

He pushed Qin Yi away and leaned against the wall. He finally looked at him and asked, “What are you here doing?”

Qin Yi looked down and said respectfully, “To bring princess home.”

“Which home?”

“Depends on where the princess wants to go.”

“You captured Zhan Yin?”

“Zhan Lue’s younger sister.” Qin Yi’s gaze flickered. “The girl that was just hollering was her?”

“Why did you capture her?”

“To take her as a hostage.”

Xian Sheng looked coldly at him. Qin Yi made eye contact with him before lowering his head. In a gentle tone, “I know the princess doesn’t truly want to marry him. The North is also cold, so I’m extremely worried for the princess’ well-being.”

“Are you crazy? You’re doing all this work just to bring me back? I’m already married to Zhan Lue. This is my home in the future!”

Qin Yi’s gaze darkened. He looked at him again. “That doesn’t count.”

It wasn’t that Xian Sheng didn’t know his thoughts. He had rejected him many times, but Qin Yi was very stubborn and refused to change his heart. He was uncomfortable and wanted to end the topic right then. However, he was forced to become spirited. “This marriage is needed to maintain peace between the two countries. You should know that. If I’m gone, Zhan Lue would definitely vent his anger on the Liang Country. He would think that we violated the contract. That’d be his excuse to start war.”

“I will kill Zhan Lue.”

“When?” Xian Sheng was unable to bear his tone. “Now? Qin Yi, where were you when the capital was surrounded? Where were you when elder brother was heavily injured? Where were you when Zhan Lue conquered twenty cities? In the past, the capital has been aiding you when needed. But you never returned the favor once. What do you want now, by killing Zhan Lue?”

“I just want you.” Qin Yi said in a deep voice. “I’m waiting for the capital to reach its end. That way, I can make a deal with your emperor father, and marry you.”

Xian Sheng pursed his lips. He felt a surge of anger in his heart, and he also found it funny. “100,000 soldiers were taken as hostage and countless civilians were homeless as a result. They’ve lost their families and home, even killed by your birth father. However, you ignored all of this. You’re telling me that you’re doing this for me now?!”

He chuckled, although he was angry. He coughed nonstop. Qin Yi reached over, but Xian Sheng slapped his hand. He didn’t dare to anger Xian Sheng. He withdrew his hand and continued to explain, attempting to quell his anger. “From the start, I mentioned my condition. Your emperor father still refused to accept them. He clearly knew how madly in love I had been with you. However, he didn’t let me marry you. I…I had no other choices.”

Xian Sheng coughed a few mouthfuls of blood. Qin Yi walked over worriedly, but Xian Sheng slapped his hands away again. His pale paled, thinking about these trivial matters. If he knew this, he wouldn’t have been a princess then. After all, he was just trying to live day by day now.

He was considering the situation. If he told his secret to Qin Yi right now, would he be angered to death or would he kill the deceiving princess first?

The more he thought about it, the more funny he thought it was. Qin Yi was also as funny as Zhan Lue who exchanged ten cities for him.

Thinking of this, Xian Sheng really laughed. He looked up, curling his red plump lips up. He seemed to be even more beautiful than the corals embroidered on the screen. Qin Yi held in his breath and clutched his fingers tightly, controlling himself.

“Do you want to know why my emperor father refuses to let you marry me?”

Qin Yi’s voice was hoarse and deep. His gaze was harsh and cold. “Why?”

Although Xian Sheng didn’t reveal his expression on the surface, his heart skipped quickly. After all, he had been a “girl” for a long time, but now he had to tell everyone that he was a man and that he would be facing unknown consequences.

Qin Yi sat by the side, his attitude respectful like a gentle wolf. It was hard to imagine him placing bombs under the ice just by seeing the way he treated Xian Sheng. It was even harder to imagine him leading the troops and conquering cities, watching his motherland walk into ruins. Even more, there was no way one could imagine him to be a ruthless person that ignored his father’s death.

He treated Xian Sheng nicely because he loved her. He respected him because he was the eldest princess of the country. The pre-condition was that he was a girl, a weak girl that called for pity.

In terms of strength, Xian Sheng couldn’t even murder a chicken. However, Qin Yi was different. He already held extraordinary martial arts skills when he was kicked out of the capital. Within the past two days, he had been honing his strength in Zhelong City. He also recovered from his leg injury. If he wanted, crushing Xian Sheng was as easy as crushing an ant.
