Chapter 7

Xian Sheng was fuming with anger.

He believed that since Zhan Lue said that he would make the Liang Country die with him had he died meant that he didn’t intend on treating this marriage seriously.

Xian Sheng had no idea how long he could continue to live, so he’ll get through day by day right now.

Coughs. He felt powerless, so he turned his head to the side instead.

Now that things had come to this point, he didn’t have the right to go against Zhan Lue anymore. Xian Sheng teared up a bit after hearing Zhan Lue’s words.

“You refuse to call me hubby?” Zhan Lue’s hand wiped Xian Sheng’s wet forehead and said, “I made sure the princess gets to eat and drink well, yet you didn’t sleep well as you should. You fainted in the sedan chair today. Those who knew about princess’ condition would pity you for your weak body. But for those who don’t know…they would think that you have something against our Jin Country.”

Zhan Lue…is angry?

Xian Sheng was sensitive towards people’s emotions. Although Zhan Lue was saying this in a gentle tone and he treated him gently as well, Xian Sheng still detected his faint anger.

Lately, it was true that he hadn’t slept well in the post station. It was because he had just arrived in an unfamiliar country and also because he was worried about the wedding.

It was because of these thoughts that he fainted today. However, he didn’t expect Zhan Lue to see through this. He suddenly felt guilty and rubbed the palm of his hand on his body, looking ill at ease.

He had a clear face like an egg whose shell had been peeled off. Zhan Lue stared at Xian Sheng and his gaze deepened, “Princess hasn’t slept the entire night because you’re excited for our wedding or because…you’re scared of me?”

His pitch-black eyelashes flickered and Xian Sheng debated, “Why should I be scared of you?”

Although he seemed to be panicking, there was a sense of seriousness in his expression. Zhan Lue stared at him for a while before smiling. “Princess is right. We’re a couple and in the future, we’re on the same boat. We’ll suffer misfortune and enjoy blessings together. Why would any wife be scared of their husband?”

He continued, “I am overthinking this.”

Xian Sheng couldn’t see through him, but he also recognized that he had something to say. He looked away and said, “It is.”

“That’s good.” Zhan Zhen finally distanced himself from him and said, “There’s something wrong with Gu Qiantou. The princess should remember to eat something and have a good rest.”

He stood up and put the curtains by the side of the bed down. While doing so, he glanced at Xian Sheng and said meaningfully, “See you tonight.”

Then, he let go and the heavy curtains separated the two.

Zhan Lue stood on the other side for a moment before leaving. As he walked out, Xian Sheng heard him order, “Bring the items inside. Don’t disturb the princess’ sleep.”

The matron of honor said, “…It’s not even time to lift the cover or share a nuptial cup yet. Why is she going to sleep?”

“Let her eat something before going to sleep.”

“Ok.”

Then, someone walked into the room and then secretly left. Xian Sheng laid there for a while and was about to fall asleep when he heard the door being pushed open again. Ruyi’s voice rang, “His Highness ordered someone to bring in a bowl of edible bird’s nest for the princess. He wants you to sleep after you’re done eating.”

Xian Sheng touched his stomach and immediately sat up. He pulled the curtains to the side as Ruyi said, “The matron of honor is waiting outside. Princess, just eat it for now.”

He grabbed the bowl and had two scoops. He listened to the matron of honor murmuring badly about him. She was talking about how the bride should’ve sat up straight in bed for the whole day during the wedding day. Then, the groom would come to lift the cover off the bride’s head. Who dares to let the matron of honor wait outside in the cold? Even more, the bride gets to sleep inside.

But this was the Crown Prince’s order, and no one dared to defy it.

“His Highness is a considerate person.” Ruyi commented.

Xian Sheng said nothing. After the whole day of torment, he finally got to eat something. His stomach felt much better and he quickly fell asleep.

The matron of honor went from criticizing Xian Sheng for his lack of manners to feeling lifeless outside as she had to endure the cold wind. She stood outside, in a daze.

Ruyi and Yue Hua had worn thick clothes. Compared to the matron of honor, they were instead worried.

Zhan Lue was only good to Xian Sheng because he was beautiful and thought that he was a weak princess, thus the reason why he treated Xian Sheng considerately. But Zhan Lue would probably be furious and indignant once he uncovered the truth.

They hoped that time could pass by slower.

However, time never satisfied people’s wishes. By evening, the drunk Zhan Lue was supported over by a few young masters and Jiang Qin. “Ok, ok. We should all go. Let’s not disturb the Crown Prince on his wedding night.”

Zhan Lue stood outside the door as he pinched the space between his eyebrows. He said in a slightly drunk tone, “Stop creating an uproar. Go back and drink.”

He dismissed the guys away before pushing the door and walking in.

A gust of cold wind blew into the warm room. There was movement from behind the curtains. Xian Sheng was startled awake.

The door closed and then a chair scraped against the floor. Xian Sheng held in his breath. After a while, there was still no movement. He tested the waters, pulling the curtains to the side to see a pair of intoxicated eyes.

Zhan Lue stood in front of the bed. It was unclear how long he had been staring at him for. Xian Sheng’s heart thumped violently and then his chin was lifted by Zhan Lue.

“Your Highness…” The hand was like a metal plier and Xian Sheng instinctively went to tug on Zhan Lue’s wrist. The strong smell of alcohol attacked Xian Sheng’s nose and then his lips were captured in the next moment.

Zhan Lue was as hungry as a wolf, hungry and greedy for the kiss. He was too strong and ten Xian Shengs wouldn’t be his match.

Xian Sheng thought about his situation. He couldn’t retreat nor could he push him away.

He laid down and his tears flowed down his cheeks. Zhan Lue finally let him go.

Zhan Lue supported his elbow behind Xian Sheng’s head as he glanced at Xian Sheng’s huge eyes which were brimming with tears. He slowly moved over and kissed his tears away, asking in a hoarse voice, “Why are you crying?”

Xian Sheng was truly frightened by this. He was shaking uncontrollably. “We, we still didn’t share a nuptial cup yet…”

Zhan Lue reached over to wipe Xian Sheng’s tears. He said, “I’ll bring the cups over.”

He moved a step back and Xian Sheng slightly relaxed his stiffened body but then started shaking again. He sucked in a breath and then started coughing violently. He helped himself up and then climbed out of bed. He followed Zhan Lue to the table and talked before Zhan Lue could, “Let me.”

He poured the wine with trembling hands. The wine spilled. Zhan Lue stared silently. It was unclear whether he had drank too much wine which caused him to react slowly or because he was thinking about something, but Xian Sheng couldn’t see through him.

He poured the two jadeite cups with wine, but there was excess wine on the table as well.

Xian Sheng delivered a cup to Zhan Lue. His eyes were slightly red and swollen, brimming with tears.

Zhan Lue grabbed the cup and turned his wrist around. Xian Sheng shyly followed suit. He stiffly drank the cup of wine with Zhan Lue before separating his arm from Zhan Lue’s.

Zhan Lue placed the cup down and said, “Does the princess want to do anything else?”

“I…” He looked around and said, “I want to sleep on that small bed today.”

Zhan Lue glanced at it and raised his eyebrows. “That’s a great place.”

Xian Sheng asked skeptically, “You…allow me?”

“Since we’re married, this entire Crown Prince’s residence is your home. You can sleep wherever you want.”

Xian Shen didn’t expect Zhan Lue to be that understanding. He was delighted in his heart and he took a few steps back to increase the distance between him and Zhan Lue. He said, “Then, then…I’m going over.”

Zhan Lue nodded.

Xian Sheng turned around to pull the drawers open, pulling out a blanket with difficulty. He carried it over to the small bed and then panted. He just sat down when he noticed Zhan Lue following him with a white cloth in his hand. He observed Xian Sheng and asked, “Are you cold?”

“No.” Xian Sheng hurriedly said, “There should be Chinese herbs in the incense and there are also furnaces here. The entire room is warm. Your Highness, there’s no need to worry.”

“That’s good.” Zhan Lue pulled the blanket to the side and sat on bed. It was a little cramped for two people to sit together in a row. Therefore, he moved over and pulled Xian Sheng into his arms, having him sit on his lap.

Xian Sheng was speechless.

Zhan Lue was confused.

“…This…this seems to be a little cramped for two people to sleep here.”

Zhan Lue glanced at him and suddenly furrowed his eyebrows. “Didn’t the princess suggest sleeping on the small bed because it is small? That way, we can be closer to one another? Did I misunderstand?”

Xian Sheng stayed stiff in Zhan Lue’s arms. He pursed his lips and didn’t know what to say for the time being. When his gaze landed on the white cloth that Zhan Lue threw to the side, he seemingly thought of a topic. “Then, why did you bring a white cloth over?”

“This…” Zhan Zhen smiles again. He puts the tip of his nose against Xian Sheng’s cheek and says, “It’s used to collect the princess’s first red night. Tomorrow I’ll show it to my mother.”

“……” The deeper the topic, the more numb Xian Sheng’s scalp: “in fact, I’m not feeling well today.”

“I could tell.” Zhan Lue comforted, “I drank too much today. That’s why I accidentally scared the princess…I promise you that I’ll be gentle. Don’t be scared, okay?”

The arm around Xian Sheng’s waist tightened and the other hand was moving around his body. Xian Sheng was forced to stop him. He asked nervously, “How much did you drink today?”

“Not that much.” Zhan Lue kissed Xian Sheng’s face and said, “If you don’t like me drinking, I won’t drink in the future.”

“The smell of alcohol is too strong and I can’t breathe.” Xian Sheng said with difficulty, “Plus, I actually don’t feel well. When I first arrived at the capital, I wasn’t used to the climate at all…I’m scared that I might not be able to satisfy Your Highness.”

Zhan Lue asked, “Are you unwilling to consummate our marriage?”

Cough…Xian Sheng covered his mouth to call and avoided Zhan Lue’s gaze while he was at it.

The man was breathing quietly but Xian Sheng could tell that he was holding himself back. After a moment, Zhan Lie said, “I heard that Qin Yi had gotten into an argument with the Crown Prince of the Liang Country because of you, right?”

Xian Sheng didn’t understand how Qin Yi was part of this. He said carefully, “I don’t understand.”

“Qin Yi is Qin Tao’s illegitimate son and three years older than you. He frequently enters the palace with the Second Prince and has a close relationship with you.”

Xian Sheng responded even more cautiously, “He has extraordinary literary skills and is knowledgeable in many areas. I am bored in the palace and I don’t have any friends. He’s someone I speak to occasionally.”

“He loves you.”

Xian Sheng froze and questioned his words. “This…”

“He doesn’t have a good relationship with the Crown Prince because he wants to forcibly take the princess for himself. The Crown Prince refused and Qin Tao was forced to break one of Qin Yi’s legs as a result.”

Xian Sheng’s heart skipped a beat. This was a secret in the Liang Country and a scandal. Qin Tao didn’t dare to disclose this information nor did the Royal Family. As for Xian Sheng, he knew his real identity. When he recalled this matter, his scalp went numb. He felt incredibly awkward and embarrassed, obviously not going to tell anyone about this.

“Don’t spout nonsense…Qin Yi has nothing to do with me!”

Zhan Lue smiled again. “It’s not like you don’t know why I suddenly decided to marry you. It’s because I saw the letters between your emperor father and Qi Yi. The capital is requesting backup from the Zhelong City. Qi Yi only had one condition and that was to exchange the princess for backup. I almost died in his hands four years ago and I know his personality. You might not know but Qi Tao’s other two legal sons were actually killed by Qin Yi and not the Jins.”

Xian Sheng parted his lips but Zhan Lue continued, “I was curious back then, wondering what type of person could move Qin Yi’s heart. Up until I saw you on the city tower. Coincidentally, I received the letter that the capital agreed to exchange the princess for backup not long after I brought you back to the military camp. Guess what?…”

Xian Sheng’s expression became stern right then. “You intercepted it.”

Zhan Lue intercepted the letter and forced Xian Sheng to marry him under the pressure of the magnificent army of soldiers. Qin Yi requested exchanging Xian Sheng for manpower but he hadn’t received a response. Right after, he received the news, so what would he think? From the capital’s perspective, however, since they didn’t receive Qin Yi’s response, they were forced to agree to Zhan Lue’s conditions. In the course of time, Qin Yi would think that the capital was intentionally humiliating him, so he would naturally break off relations with the capital. Xian Sheng said angrily, “You want the Zhelong City and the capital to harm each other mutually, so you can benefit from the battle! You don’t even like me. Infatuated Crown Prince? Fake! You’re so despicable, cough, cough…”

“It’s true that I want Qin Yi to fall out with the Liang Country, but it’s also true that I fell in love with you at first sight. I never thought of benefiting from the battle.” Zhan Lue caressed Xian Sheng’s back and knitted his eyebrows. “If I wanted to, I wouldn’t have telled you this.”

Xian Sheng shook as he coughed. He leaned against Zhan Lue dizzily and gradually calmed down. He realized that Zhan Lue’s words were true, but he still glared at him. He said rudely, “Then why are you telling me this?”

Xian Sheng couldn’t see through the emotions in Zhan Lue’s eyes. He said, “You’re not willing to consummate our marriage because you like Qin Yi?”

“…” Xian Sheng’s mind went blank for a moment. After weighing his decisions, he said, “Obviously not.”

Zhan Lue stared at him quietly before gradually saying, “I’m being truthful, so you should be truthful too. It’s only fair like this.”

“I…it’s not Qin Yi, ok!”

“Besides having someone you like, I can’t think of another reason why you would rather anger your husband on your wedding night.”

Xian Sheng murmured, “You, you’re angry?”

Zhan Lue answered him with a question, “What do you think?”
