Chapter 31, Is this the Governor?

Hodgson really didn’t know that one of their Alliance Council members, Wo Han, was a cult member.

He had no idea of this information beforehand.

Now that Gu Hang had revealed it, he was stunned.

After coming to his senses, his first reaction was to doubt: Was the Governor making up the fact that Wo Han was a cult member as an excuse to cause trouble for Fuxing City?

“This matter is of great importance. Governor, do you have any evidence to prove this?”

“The evidence is conclusive. The people who attacked the transport team were instructed by Wohan. I eliminated the gangsters in his manor and arrested him. I saw this guy use the storm magic with my own eyes…”

“You seem to know nothing now, Speaker Hodgson. I am very disappointed. A member of the Alliance has been corrupted, and you, as the Speaker of the Parliament, have no information at all. Is this a dereliction of duty, or has the Alliance Parliament itself been condoning the spread of cults in Renaissance City?”

Hodgson immediately denied: “Absolutely not! We have been strengthening the crackdown on cults. How could we condone the spread of cults? I will investigate this matter…”

Before Hodgson finished speaking, he was interrupted by Gu Hang: “Investigate? If you wait for your investigation, what will Renaissance City become? Even members of the Parliament can be corrupted. How can I believe that you can find out anything?”

Hodgson was forced to worry about Gu Hang.

This completely unexpected news caught him off guard. He hadn’t made any plans, so he could only bite the bullet and say, “We will definitely take effective measures to deal with this problem. We will conduct background checks on all council members and strengthen the investigation of cults in the entire city.”

Gu Hang said, “I’ll give you this chance. But I also want to remind you that our city is facing serious threats. I want you to solve this problem as soon as possible and thoroughly! If I don’t see your more positive attitude, then I will take action myself and hold you responsible for it.”

Hodgson could only try to guarantee, “We will do our best and take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the city. I promise you that we will give you an explanation.”

“You’d better keep your word.”

…

After hanging up the phone, Hodgson frowned tightly.

He didn’t want to be in a weak position every time he communicated with the Governor.

However, what else could he do?

The first time he came to ask for supplies, he asked for allocation with the power of the Governor. The amount was not small, but it was not yet unbearable. He was stuck at the limit of Fuxing City’s ability to pay, so they had to accept it with a pinch of their noses. No one wanted to completely offend the Governor and fall out with him for such a small amount of supplies.

The second time was when Wohan attacked the transport team without authorization. This was his own behavior, and Hodgson had no psychological pressure to sell him out.

In those two times, the Governor had hinted that he would use his authority and orbital bombardment in the sky to exert extreme pressure and threaten, in order to get something. At this point, if Hodgson didn’t want to fall out, he had no choice but to compromise.

And this third time, although the Governor didn’t make too many threats and didn’t ask for anything, his tone was the harshest, directly accusing the Alliance Parliament of either dereliction of duty or being a traitor. He had

a firm grip on the topic.

But Hodgson couldn’t refute it.

This time the Governor was on the commanding heights.

The Primordial Owl Beast Cult is the public enemy of many forces in the wasteland. They do not believe in the God-Emperor, but instead believe in the so-called “Primordial Owl Beast”; they master the evil magic of storms, and have actually created many tragedies that destroyed gathering places.

How can you explain that a member of the Alliance is actually a member of this cult?

No matter how you explain it, it doesn’t make sense!

The Governor was angry and had reasons to be angry.

He thought he had just sold out a greedy grain merchant. If that guy wanted to go against the Governor, he should let him be the target and die. But this person turned out to be a member of the cult, which was completely unexpected for Hodgson.

He also realized the seriousness of the matter.

After hesitating for a moment, old Hodgson turned to look at his grandson Lambert and asked, “The Governor said that Wohan is a cult member. Do you think it is possible?”

“Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s false.” Lambert Hodgson listened to the conversation between his grandfather and the Governor in full. He carefully gave his own answer, “But now this matter is not critical. Since the Governor used this as a handle to attack, it means that he must have some evidence. Even if this evidence is not true, the Governor must have forged it well enough. We are really passive now.”

Regarding Lambert’s speculation, old Hodgson sighed and continued to ask, “Then what do you think the Governor will do next?”

Lambert pondered, “He may use this as an excuse to further intervene in the political situation of Renaissance City, deprive us of our power in the name of combating cults, and then control the entire Renaissance City.”

“From what you said, you seem to be very dissatisfied with this?”

Lambert was stunned.

“Grandfather?” He didn’t understand why his grandfather asked this.

“The Governor is the planetary ruler appointed by the Empire and the head of the Union Government. Isn’t it legitimate and reasonable for the Governor to completely control Renaissance City?”

Lambert frowned tightly and said with difficulty: “You…you are saying…but…”

Old Hodgson talked about another thing: “I still remember that you said your ideal was to save the world?”

“…Yes, it was nonsense when I was young and frivolous…”

“Then I ask you now, is this ideal still buried in your heart?”

Lambert didn’t want to answer: “Grandpa, why are you talking about this?”

“I told you that only the Governor can save the world. I don’t know if it is this Governor Gu, so I have been hesitant, just like the previous governors, all failed. But I recently figured out a problem: How many more governors can we wait for?”

“I don’t understand… Could it be that you want to?…”

“No, it hasn’t come to that step yet. I just think that this governor is a little different from the previous ones.” Old Hodgson said, “As for now, I think you have missed the point.”

“Please teach me.”

“The focus now is not what the Governor will do next, but what we have to do. What we have to do is also very simple, to find out how serious the original Owlbeast Sect has spread in Renaissance City and what their purpose is. This is the most important thing, a matter of life and death. What’s the point of intrigue? It would be ridiculous to defeat the Governor and then have the city destroyed by the cult members.”

“I understand!”
